If you ever get to the Choctawhatchee Bay on the Gulf Coast (Destin, FL), drop a line and we can meet up. My boat is at Bluewater Bay Marina on the north shore off Rocky Bayou east of Niceville.

There are at least three C-310s that call the Bay home.

Very nice! Wishing you a safe journey!

Here is a stupid non cruiser question. When you say "We cut the lines" do you actually cut the dock lines as a departing ceremony or is it just a phrase used? I kind of like imagining someone takes a machete and chops off the dock lines so there is no going back.

I think it's an "option" kinda like sacrificing someone during the name changing ceremony.:eek::eek:

What Smitty may hesitate to mention:

It took a TON of hard work, research and homework to make it actually happen.

Jesse is one of those great skippers who have documented what he's done so very well. I recommend that all of you check his blog, it's among the very best I've read that explains systems and equipment and how he got there with resources and links. Not only did he and his wife do their homework and real work, they also documented it so very well to make it easier for those following their in wake.

Thanks everyone.

Sitting in Block Island now having a cigar in the cockpit while it starts to rain. It's great to know that there is some weather predicted for tomorrow but we can stay put and just wait it out for a better day. Still feels like we are just on vacation. But it's only the first week and that feeling will probably change soon.

We thought about actually cutting some old dock lines but they still have some use in them so we didn't. Plus it was 3am.

No we didn't finish the epic to do list but the biggest thing we learned from the old salts was to set a date and go. You will always have time to work on projects. In fact we didn't even have everything stored below. We had piles of supplies in the salon. We used that first storm delay to organize and put stuff away. I have a draft blog post in the works about it.

I know Bob S can relate to this, we had one of those days Friday that gives you a lot of faith in you boat. We sailed from Onset to Cutty Hunk which means sailing the whole length of Buzzards Bay. It was a small craft advisory and that can mean a lot in Buzzards Bay. Winds were a pretty constant 25 kts with that infamous BB chop. We had 4-6 foot quarter and following seas with periods less then 2 seconds. Many of them breaking on us and for a time I was concerned they were going to come in the walk through. But Smitty's big a$$ did just what it was designed to do. That reserve buoyancy just lifted us up and we surfed down, hitting 8-9 kts on some. My feet stayed dry the whole trip.

The big spade rudder was great as well. Stayed well balanced and easy to control

Today the seas were like glass almost all the way to Block Island. No wind so we motor the whole way. Oh well. Sat in the perch seat and let the auto pilot do most of the work.

Long Island Sound is up next. We spent a lot of time plotting this area doing out captain's course and my Bride grew up on the sound, so we know the area well on paper but sailing it is always different.

We have a lot of posts to catch up with on upgrades we have done. Next stormy day I guess.

Fair winds,

Jesse

We've seen our share of those conditions this year. Enjoy Block Island. Have a beer at Oars for us! We spent a week in New Harbor and explored the island. Much more low keyed that Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. I loved it there. I won't do it again with SW winds. Took 8 hours beating into 4 footers with 20kts in our face the last 6 hours. Hit some dense fog leaving Cutty Hunk too.

I'm envious. I'll be following your blog.

Sounds very exciting, starting reading your blog this weekend. I'm in East Hampton as you visit Block Island. I'll be very interested in you Long Island Sound passage. I have not sailed there yet.

Congratulations! Make sure you plan a stop in AC on your way south. It's the easiest in,et in NJ to navigate and you have plenty of places to provision. Plus, I said I'd buy you a beer before!

Congratulations Jesse!

Fair Winds! Perhaps we will bump into each other (figuratively speaking)! My S.O. and I cast off from New Hamburg NY on the Hudson on 9/9 and got the boat to Solomons MD. It sits there for 4 weeks or so while we take a trip to Italy. On our return, it's back to the boat to head further south.

Keep your progress posted on the forum! I should do that too .... and will do it when we start back up.
