My Youngest son and I (the oldest is to cool to be seen with us)
took our maiden voyage this Saturday on a local lake in our new to us Venture 22.
I had a quick crash course on sailing two weeks ago from a nice Gentlman who took me out on his flying scott. very light wind but just enough to give me the confidence to get out there and do it!! Thanks Monroe!!!

IT WAS THE MOST AMAZING THING!!!!!! IM totally hooked!!
We were all over the place but i think we are getting the hang of it. AT one point we were just over 8 knots and 15deg!!! you guys are laughing I'm sure but to us.... it was very intense!!!

Best Wishes on many, many more great days of sailing! It's wonderful to do things like that with your son. Activity like sailing will show each of you some part of the other one's personality that doesn't surface too often. Life jackets for everyone.

Thanks for the wishes 31seahorse !! I originally had just bought the old style orange jackets thinking that we wouldn't have them on much BUT, having watched a lot of videos and hearing a lot of people say just that, I went and got auto inflating jackets for everyone. GREAT ADVICE!!!!

Congratulations on harnessing the wind. I don't think anyone will laugh at someone's first sail. It's magical, and a lifetime of enjoyment. We're all still learning how to do it better in our own way on our own piece of water. Keep learning and ask questions here. It's a great group of experts.

Thanks Parsons!
Heres a question!!
Im getting this loud noise from the boat when it starts really moving. Its sounds like a loud hum and if I had to guess I would say its coming from the keel cable being pulled through the water.
What is that noise and is it normal?

I like the smile pic. looks like you had a perfect day.

Take the next bit with a grain of salt as I don't have a Venture but you may be right on about the hum. Try changing the tension in the keel cable and see if the noise changes. It could also be related to a bit of flutter in the rudder. Our Hobie 16 made a humming noise from the rudders when it was really moving.

Cheers

LOL - the first time I heard our keel cable humming I was like WTF????
I thought it the power station at the dam or project ELF or martians and I tried my best to pretend to the Admiral that I wasn't in the least nouevous. She finally decided it was coming from dasbOOt - and then I was struck by what the cause was. Sheesh!

Now I live to hear the keel cable humming. The louder and higher pitch the better!

Congrats on your first splash and welcome to the addiction.

Sounds like you had a good sail. That is a good thing! Hopefully the youngest will continue to like it.

Well hey! Congrats on the maiden voyage. I see you are sailing Lake Wylie - so are we! We just got a Hunter 25.5 about a month ago and are in a slip at Long Cove Marina. In fact we were out sailing on Saturday as well, our second time out with the boat (our Maiden Voyage was last weekend). Would be cool to meet another local sailing newbie sometime. See you around the lake!

Welcome to the sport/hobby/obsession. Still newer here as well. Enjoy the winds and family time with your son. I bet the older one will be out before you know it when he sees your enthusiasm.

Sometimes these maiden sails turn into a "Chinese Fire Drill" or a "Circus Act" so I might understand why your oldest son may have elected to skip this one but do not worry when he sees how much fun you all had he will want to go in the future. We all started in similar fashion.

Hey NitroRoo!!! I think we seen you down near the sand bar???? We were trying to get down that way but just couldn't put it together i guess...
We actually put in down at T-Bones (NEVER DOING THAT AGAIN!!) but anyway we made it down to long cove funny enough. Hope we see you out there! My son would get a total kick out of that. He was excited when he seen other sails up and pointed (you?) out right away, "LOOK DAD" LOOK"

AWESOME DAY!!
thanks everyone for all the congratulations!!

Would that be Lake Norman? This is the best time of the year? watch the unmarked shallow areas. there are some well known places that date back to the lake's construction.

The gentleman that I mention was in fact on lake Norman but my son and I took our first trip here on Lake Wylie..
We do plan on being on Norman though. My brothers and I have a summer cabin there on norman. Our Grandparents buit it by hand during the lakes construction. I have had a scare or two in some of those shallow coves! Lucky for me I was on a jet ski. I wounder why all those boaters were looking at me like I was fool. Then I noticed I was in about 6 inchs of water!!

Thanks for all the warm comments!!!

Cool - yeah that was probably us! We sailed North and then up around the bend past the sandbar. Anchored up in a little cove by the Stowe Botanical Gardens and enjoyed a late lunch on the water. Good times!
