Peggy, I recently acquired two Imperial 51 heads. Both operable. I have disassembled both in order to install a rebuild kit in the best one. The one that I want to use has a lot of scale buildup in the base. What would be the best way to clean this up? Thanks.

Soak in a 12% solution of muriatic acid and water

for 30-40 minutes. Just be VERY careful to follow mixing and handling instructions. Alternatively (and safer), undiluted white vinegar, although it'll take longer and may require more than one application. Whichever, help it with a wire brush. Those are a couple of very impressive toilets, real bronze "thrones" built to last at least 100 years. So although W-C no longer makes the Imperial model (it's been replaced by the Skipper and Skipper II) but they'll continue to support it with parts forever. Comparable new is about $1000...even used, they're worth $250-$300 if they're in decent shape. So even though you only want to use one, for pete's sake don't just toss out the other one!

Thanks Peggie

I decided to go with the straight vinegar. I stripped all parts from both WC's and soaked everything except the bowls overnight. Not only was I able to get the interior buildup removed but the old exterior paint and green tarnish was removed. The bronze pumps look so good I hate to repaint. But after assembly I will paint in order to prevent tarnish. I assume washing the parts in soap and water will that be enough to neutralize the vinegar.

Lacquer will last as long as paint.

And will allow you to keep the the look of polished bronze. As for "neutralizing" the vinegar, just wash well in detergent and water.
