Waxing gone bad.

Well after hours of getting rid of oxidized gel-coat and compounding and 3 layers of wax the top side was looking pretty good. Till I went up there after it rained. And it was covered with black spots that wont come off. Talk about frustration!!!!!!! HAVE NO IDEA WHY THIS WOULD HAPPEN OR WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT.

You say wont come off. What did you do to try remove it? Did you try to compound out just a small bit to see if that would work? You may also want to try a 10/1 bleach mixture to see if that works.

The most likely cause is acid rain. Try a dollop of Meguiars One Step with a terry rag on the stains. Good luck and good sailing, Ron

Ive started using something called TR3 from pepboys car place.
Its a resin that bonds with the fiberglass surface.
I put it on my chalked blue side stripe and it came up nice.
It has to be rubbed into the surface ,I tried my buffer but it didn't work too great
I also had some black spots which it removed. GL with your spots

It looks like, unfortunately for you, that someone sanded their bottom paint and when it rained it stirred up paint dust. My bet is there is a boat very near you with a newly sanded and painted black bottom ! The good news it is will come off.....wax or cleaner and wax combo should take in off. It rains and the water beads up, next dust settles in water beads and dissolves and or absorbes the dust already on your topsides. Next black tinted water bead drys leaving the black tinted mark. My suggestion is to clean it sooner rather then later. I have had it happen to my boat twice (once mine was green)and it is really depressing but not much you can do about it. For just that reason I don't wax my topsides until the boat is in the water.Good Luck !

A Sad Tale But True ..............................

........................ in that I had the same thing happen to me as did Petersea. My boat would up covered in light blue spots after it rained while on the hard. And we ARE ASSUMING that you are on the hard.

The wax/cleaner will hopefully work so that your wax job is not lost. I finally wound up using Meguiar's color restorer before I was able to completely remove all of the stains I had.

Looks like 'artillery fungus', a common fungus that thrives on tree bark and which 'explodes' when it rains and the air is laden with pollen. Very common species that forms 'black specs', especially after a rain.

Its probably 'eating' your WAX or the tree pollen that got embedded in your wax when you applied it. If you see a lot of 'black staining/streaking' on roof shingles where you keep the boat ... its probably 'artillery fungus'.

Try to repolish with a bit a wax, not slather with wax. If that doesnt correct the problem and it 'is' artillery fungus, then the only sure way to get rid of it is to wash off the wax using a caustic detergent ... dissolves the fungus AND the wax.
I use Collenite "Fleet Wax" which doesnt seem to be affected (as bad) by 'artillery fungus'.

Bottom dust?

Well that might be it since I been doing my bottom. And also other sanding on a repair. I have only used a dry rag so far. I will get a wax cleaner tomorrow and try that. To early here in Akaska for pollen. Doubtful it is artillery fungus. But who knows. Thanks all for the inPut.
