Waxer Polisher Option

I see a new Dual Action Polisher made by Shurhold for 149 bucks in the new BoatUS magazine. How does this unit compare to the Makita recommended here? Unit is about a hundred bucks cheaper. Personally I have been using a black and decker model for many years and am pretty disappointed. The random orbit is annoying when compounding but OK for just polishig. Not a variable speed either just one speed for all tasks.

Only about $40 cheaper.. 4.2amp motor (makita has 10amp), lowest speed is 2500 rpm (makita is 600), no slow-start function and I doubt it has the electronic speed control that the Makita has (maintain rpm regardless of load). I also don't like the random orbit as it makes it harder to get in close to objects. Amazon has free shipping and no sales tax. Shipping is via FedEx ground and I had mine in 3 days.

I think the extra features and ease of obtaining replacement parts is worth the extra $40. YMMV.

It's amazing how much less tiring is is to use a rotary. You muscles are fighting the constant changes in direction of the orbital on a micro scale that doesn't really let them work. I just bought the Makita and would have paid a lot more than 40 bucks additional in this case.

I LOVE my Makita

I bought it to use on fine finishes but I have found I use it for lots of other stuff. I got a cutting/grinding disk that I've used on many projects. Couldn't do that with a DA.

I have a confession to make. I am selling my boat and wanted to detail it, so I went and bought one of those Harbor Freight polishers. I meant to splurge and get the digital model for $59 but grabbed the wrong box and ended up with the $29 model instead. I bought so much stuff I didn't notice the difference at the register. When I unpacked it at the boat I didn't feel like going all the way back so I decided to use it and it did a great job. It also has a 10 amp motor (may be Chinese amps vs Japanese amps) but it did the job. I have a feeling that it should last at least 3-4 seasons.
As Roger pointed out it is less tiring than the orbital and much much faster. I also bought the velcro attachable bonnet from Harbor Freight and was pleased with that as well. Much easier that tying on a bonnet.

Bob, that all depends on what you do with her. If you maintain her well and sell her better than when you found her, it will not be easy to say goodbye.

She is a 1985 Ericson 35-3 that I bought in 2006. I have been restoring her ever since. She is a race winner and a great cruiser. We won the overall wed. series in 2008 and the 2008 and 2009 Northeast Harbor Race. Many 2nd and 3rds too. MaineSail is a regular crew member. We usually sail every weekend and spend 2 weeks aboard in Sep. every year. We sail her right up to Thanksgiving.

She has been sold to a gentleman in PA who will keep her in Annapolis. It is time for us to upgrade and move aboard in preparation for some extended cruising.

You've done an amazing job with her. I looked at an Ericson 35 and they are really nice boats for interior accomodations as well. What is the draft because the mid atlantic states typically go for boats a max of five feet but you find a few a little deeper. mine is 5'7" which gets me by in the ICW and the NC sounds but I always have to know exactly where I am on the charts since the whole pamlico sound is about 20 feet deep.

i have an ericson 35mII--different entirely from the mIII----different keel and different measurements---i love her but am selling her as i like roooom...lol...yours is a sweet boat...

She draws 6'2"(according to factory specs). I have not personally measured her. In Maine you do not sail anywhere without at least a couple of feet under your keel so those inches don't mean as much here as they do in the ICW. I believe there is also a wing keel version that draws less but suffers a little upwind.
