waxed paper

Can I wrap the prop with waxed paper to prevent barnacles growing on it? When I run the engine, I suppose the spinning prop would disintegrate the wrapping as intended. Will it work? Any environment issue?

Paint don't last on prop. Wrapping prevents or reduces barnacle growing on prop. Obviously need to rewrap prop after each use. Not sure if waxed paper will last couple of weeks just sitting there all wrap around prop.

Hi Ken,

Paint it with bottom paint (I'm presuming for extended storage) and it will disappear very quickly the first few times you use the engine.

Maybe Ron20324 can chime in here. I bought a prop from him about 5 years ago that was painted with something that looked like a zinc based material. I have been running it in fresh water and the coating still hasn't worn off.

get some cold galvanized spray in a spray can and coat the prop with that maybe

Waxed paper is very star and environmentally unsound. I started spraying my prop, slag and drive shaft with cold zinc galvanizing spray five years ago. Works pretty good.

I've seen cruisers tie a black plastic garbage bag over their prop when they expected to sit on a mooring for a month or more. They dive down to remove it before heading out. They can keep the bottom clean themselves but without scuba find cleaning the prop too difficult.

Rustoleum sells that... I've had good luck with it on trailers but I don't know if it would work on a prop.

Plastic bag is good but requires 2 trips down. One to unbag and another to bag. Painting don't last pass 3-6 months. Haven't come across a device setup that allow spray paint underwater yet.
So waxed paper is a no no? :(

What do you think? Would you just toss a bunch of sheets of wax paper along with tape or rubber bands into the water?

Having a little experience with lobster traps that is truly possible. Hold a roll overboard while putting the engine in gear. As it catches, let the remainder spool out as you move forward on the boat. It should foul the shaft and prop so well that you won't need the tape.

make very sure its the CUT-RITE brand the cheap stuff is absolutely no good.....

why not while you are down there just rub some waterproof grease on the prop

My bad, I wasn't clear in my post. The OP asked about environmental issues.

Who in their right mind would think that throwing trash into the water is a good idea?

Wrapping anything around your prop so it simply becomes trash is really, really bad.

I hope that makes my opinion a bit more clear.

Can someone please explain how a cold galvanize spray is going to inhibit growth on your prop if galvanizing doesn't do so on your anchor chain? Not that you are going to get a cold galvanizing spray to adhere to a bronze prop without using a very expensive etch primer, which is not a good thing to do to a prop.
We tried Prop Speed and it worked for a very short period of time. Certainly not worth the money. Bottom paint won't even stay on the shaft, never mind the prop, though it does stay on zincs and Dynaplates quite well, thank you boatyard painter guy.
In Oz, on the sport fish boats out of Cairns, we tried chroming our props (to attract fish, not inhibit growth). Even with the polished slickness of chrome and running almost every day, we'd still get growth on our wheels.
The guy (or gal) who does come up with something that will actually inhibit growth on our running gear if one uses the boat at all, will be one very wealthy individual!
