I have been confused by local people on how to clean the hull and deck; very simple question; does one polish or cleaner wax and then put a good coat of pure wax on the hull (it's in good shape); for deck, clean and wax; any comments would help. Tom

simple answer

without all the complexities of which buffer to use and which pad to use at what rpm, it's pretty simple: 1. clean 2. polish 3. wax cleaner/wax combination producrs are usually a compromise of both. Everyone has their favorite brands; about the only thing we can agree on is to use a carnuba wax specifically designed for the marine environment.

Waxing the Hull

For many years, I would rub on my boat hull with fiberglass rubbing compound, then use "Nu Finish" (liquid form). It goes on really easy, rubs off really easy, and keeps the oxidation back during most of the summer. The past two years, I used a marine wax called "Trewax" but I have found that it didn't hold up, during the entire summer, like the Nu Finish did, so I am going back to it. But one thing ........ I only wash the deck areas .....never wax them ...... good way to stip over board. I have rubbed out areas on the deck, but no wax ! Hope this helps. May You Have Smooth Sailing on Warm Breezes ! Poly gow

I used poly glow on my Hunter 31 1984 when I had it. Just on the Hull. It lasted all season and the boat looked like new

Below the Waterline - bottoms up

Well I just had to search out the article by Maine Sail and I found it! Yes there is only one way - the hard way, no argument there I've heard it before. As for the hull below the waterline most have bottom paint of some sort, but there are those who have trailerable sailboats and there must be someone out there who has a similarly effective method for dealing seperately with that portion of the hull. Perhaps next spring I will incorporate some of Maine sail's prep steps on the bottom before waxing, but historically I have been using Aurora Marines VS721 bottom wax as the final coat for a slick bottom with the only prep being the same companys boat scrub cream to clean it. I am willing to put more elbow grease into the process if someone can point me in the right direction since I have yet to succumb to bottom paint. Maybe when I get a bit older and weaker I'll bottom paint cause I do slip for 3-6 months depending on season length but for now I'd like a solution for the ultimate finatic on bottoms. Any suggestions out there?
