How do you stop the wave-slap-action noise at the stern of our Hunters? Last weekend we got wave action coming off the stern quarter and slapping up against the 'sugar scoop'. The noise was so loud it finally drove us to the forward stateroom about 3:30 in the morning. It was the first time the combination of wind / waves / current / & whatever combined to produce this result. We have a '95 H430. A friend of ours now in Mexico has some kind of a plastic sheet with foam pads that he got at a flea market, that he drapes over the stern right at & under the water-line. He says it works to stop the slapping noise. I cant find one, and my wife says the combind power of the Hunter Owners has to have this bit of information. SO, whatdoyoucallit?! Thanks Pat & Carole Espiritu

slapper stopper

HOLY CRAPOLLA, THAT WAS QUICK!!! Alan, thanks, the only problem now, is that I was with my buddy at the flea market when he bought his, for $100 bucks; boy is he going to rag on me if I buy a new one for $300+! Oh well, its better than either not sleeping, or having my wife stay hope 'cause of the noise. ANYBODY GOT A USED ONE THEY WANT TO SELL? Pat

Just Ordered One

After trying all of the home built solutions to cure the "Slap" I just ordered a slap silencer. have not recieved it yet but after the noise of last weekend (sounded like someone was beating the hull with a stick, a big stick to boot) I am happy to pay the 300 to silence the noise on my 37. I will let you know how it goes this weekend I am supposed to recieve it this friday. I bought it directly from the manufacture as i did not want to wait 2 weeks to get it through this site.

Clarification

Ours comes just as fast when you order from us as it does from the manufacturer. The difference is, we give you a worst case estimate of when you'll receive it (usually the manufacturer tells you nothing). Ordering it here also supports the forums, which is nice because maintaining all of this is not free. If you need it faster, call us first. We can give you a very accurate delivery estimate by phone.

alternative to slapper

Sorry Phil but a cheaper method is one dollar ear plugs from home depot- also cuts down on the admiral's snoring(thank god she has no computer skills)

Or...

you could just sling together several "swim noodles" on a line and tie it across the stern under the hull lip. Another cheap solution and also dual purpose too-you could even use them as they were orignally intended!

Noodles, huts

Tried the noodles, did not work. talked to 4 others that tried the noodles and they said they did not work for them either and they bought the silencer, which they claim works. We tried ever home remedy that I could find before popping the 300 for one.

Worth every penny

Trust me, the Slap Silencer will be worth every penny, and at $300, will prove to be the best money you ever spent on the boat. I have one and they work great.

Noodles again...

Noodles have worked for me on my 34. I used three of them in a bundle and pull them under the stern and tie them up tight. They work on the small chop we get in our marina, but other more exposed locations may get a greater slap.

slap

We never heard anything until we slept on the boat in the slip at Marina Village (Alameda, CA) with the bow facing in. We usually back in 'cause it is so great using the transom on/off. But a couple weeks ago we had an engine problem and had to sail the boat into the slip, and it's a down-wind slip. So now instead of the bow to the wind-waves etc, we are all of a sudden 'stern-to', and it sure is noisy. We have been haveing a problem with Yanmar oil filters blowing the gasket. Of course they say this has never happened before, but there are at least TWO of the same model Yanmars doing this now. If anybody knows of somebody having this kind of problem with Yanmar engines OR filters I sure would like to know about it. Pat Bill, I hope all this talk doesn't make you start hearing noise now. What ever kind of pillow you use, if it's cheaper than the $300+ for the slapper-gadget, I think I'll buy one and keep it over my ears too.

slap silencer is money well spent

Highly recommend the slap silencer. it works, is well designed for storage. You will find that installation is a snap, the best way to put it in place is with two people. Make sure you tighten your steering lock once you center your rudder.

slap silencer heaven

when we bought our hunter, the first nite we slept on it the noise was so bad it was like being in an oil drum that is being turned end over end and dropped in water repeatedly. awful! my husband got a used slap silencer on the internet for 100$. It looks like a giant diaper for a dinasour. it is extremely stupid looking. The first time we put it on, we couldnt get it between the hull and the rudder (WHERE IT MUST GO TO WORK) looked like the h40 was having a incontinent day. next time hubby put it on i laughed the whole time. Had to turn wheel rudder to side to get it in the little slot. He had to get in the water. but no more laughing at midnite when there wasnt one sound out of our transom except me sighing with pleasure over the silence! yes it works but boy it looks dumb! we also have a flopper stopper. jeez. by the time we are set up for sleeping we look like something from star wars! j

Got the Item

Well as promised last friday the USPS delivered the "Silencer". Yes it looked like a Giant Diaper, infact one dockmate asked if my boat had come into season. After following directions with no avail to get the thing on we left it riding at half mast in frustration and went to dinner. The noise was as loud as ever. Later Brain knocked into gear (after a few libations) and I ever so gently moved the rudder off of center and it slipped perfectly into place. Then went down below and was greated with the sounds of silence. Had I not heard the waves slapping just a few minutes earlier I would not have belived the difference. The Admiral is happy, and when the Admiral is happy every one is happy.
