Wauquiez Sailboats?

I realize these French-built sailboats have been around for 50 or so years, but I rarely hear of them, and even more rarely see one of 'em sailing here in the southern California milieu of Beneteaus, Catalinas, Hunters, and Jenneaus, Yesterday, I met on the water one of the later Centurion models, probably a 40 ft. Nice looking boats; resemble a Hanse. Has anybody here sailed one of these or know much about 'em?

A guy at our club has a Centurion. Without a doubt a superb boat. Much like Sabre WAS, the interior workmanship is where the big difference is betweeen the boat and its mid-tier French rivals. Happily, the French market for high-level sailboats is strong, and Wauquiez is banging them out. Their 57 is so beautiful it makes my eyes water.

Friends of ours owned and lived aboard a Wauquiez 40. They cruised it to Florida once as a couple after spending a winter aboard in the upper Chesapeake Bay. It had a HUGE wheel, running backstays, a roller furled jib, a small hatchway into the main salon, and teak decks. The decks weathered well, but eventually began to leak. The owner often vowed to "attack those decks", but that never happened prior to the boat being sold to a younger couple who knew its fine sailing characteristics. It had a deep draft and wide beam so it could take a stiff wind and sail well.

A Centurion 40s just moved in a couple of slips from me; I think the one I mentioned above. Interesting. Traveler is just fwd of the binnacle. Main sheet attached to end of boom. Enormous SS cleats. Swept-back spreaders; plumb bow; very large cockpit.

I went aboard a 49-footer at the St. Pete Boat Show a few weeks ago. The cabinetry and joinery were really well done, the teak decks went on for acres, and everything looked and felt massive. It seemed MUCH bigger than the Morgan 51 I am on regularly. Seemed fairly priced too - I think it was $99K - but you'd spend all your time doing brightwork.

Hey, my wife and I went aboard that boat, too. I kept looking around on deck and thinking what a handful it would be to sail, but it looked like it was definetly made for the open ocean. Very nice down below, too, if a little dated. My wife didn't care for the tiled galley counters.

Two (a pair) low profile cowl vents far aft, on the house near companion way; no port lights in the hull, a small opening port light each side aft of the cowl vents; fractional rig. I'd say sea going.

I have done two deliveries on a Centurian 40 from Annapolis to Key West. Then raced the same boat from Ft. Lauderdale to Key West during their off shore race and we took 2nd in our division. Then we raced Key West Race Week, which is largely round the buoy racing and we placed in the middle. This boat had a shoal keel which was important for doing the ICW when it got too rough off shore, but not so good for windward legs during round the buoy racing. The owner cruises on it and races it. It has won trophies in Charleston and Key West on other years. During races, all cruising items are removed, tape is applied on vulnerable cabinetry to keep sails and crew from scratching woodwork up, etc. and to keep the boat light. It is a nice boat for sure, but they do cut corners with material use in the woodwork area, I think, with veneers and not the greatest joinery work. It's a good boat. As the owner ages, he thinks more and more about cruising it and is thinking now of adding a genset, which is not race friendly because of the additional weight. But then.....depends on which day you talk to him. He just bought a new set of race sails for 2017. Go figure.

In response to Kings Gambit, the traveler right in front of the helm makes mainsail adjustment very convenient for the helmsperson. On the boat I sailed, however, the main sheet MA got tangled in the SS tube hand hold at the binnacle and nearly ripped it off (when exposed to a huge gust at the Potomic River which almost knocked the boat down). It was an add on, I think, to protect the GPS chart plotter, but her forward attitude got in the way and so had to be changed. When the owner bought the boat new, the chart plotter was in the basement at the nav station and not at the helm, which is where I prefer it. It was Ray Marine and there was no such thing as a repeater, so he had to buy another unit and one became the master and the other not so, but could be adjusted at the helm for important data while navigating from the cockpit. Very expensive upgrade, indeed, but since I did much of the navigation and driving, l liked it at the helm. I just would've picked Garmin as my choice as you constantly had to tear into the manual to figure out how to deal with the unit and Garmin is so intuitive you don't need a manual. Am I digressing? So sorry.

With the main sheet & traveler there, not much chance for a Bimini; which it does not have. I also noticed standing rigging of rod.

Actually, my boat has the traveler in the cockpit (on the bridge deck) and I have a bimini. On the gulf coast, you'd die without one. Admittedly, we can't connect the bimini and dodger while the main is in use, but I'm willing to accept that compromise for easier (and arguably better) sail handling.
