I am considering a Wauquiez Hood 38 for bluewater cruising however I have read that the Hood 38 doesn't like to sail more than 120 degrees off the wind and that the centerboard rattles downwind. Also, I read that the 38 is a fast boat and even good in light winds. With a displacement of 22,000, how is this possible? Relative to what I guess. Can the centerboard problem be solved? How does the 38 actually sail downwind? Is there space to add additional tankage or generator? Any Hood 38 owners out there?

Pronunciation of Wauquiez?
Can anyone tell me how to pronounce Wauquiez ? BTW, most Wauquiez sail very well. Last year in St. Martin, I chartered a Beneteau 411 while another couple that went with us on the trip Chartered a Wauquiez 38 with fixed keel. He was able to sail faster than our Beneteau which had a roller furling main.

my slip neighbors have one. it is 15 to 20 years old. it is beautiful and they say it sails magnificently in all weather and wave conditions. rt

I've always like the Ted Hood Wauquiez 38 boats. Good quality and good trade off between cruising comfort and performace. The center board is definitely different, but you could pull it up for anchoring and running. I've never heard that these boats don't sail off the wind well, but I've never actually sailed one. I have been to the Wauquiez factory (just last December), and can tell you these boats are built very well (stick built instead of pan like the Beneteaus). They build Jeanneaus in the same plant, by the way. They are fairly rare, so command quite relatively high prices for the age, but if you can get a decent deal I'd seriously consider the W38. My slip neighbor has one. and I love it. He sails very competitive in the club races, especially when the wind is over 12 knots. He got 2nd place cruising last season. In light winds it is challenging to get her to move. In strong winds they sail on their feet well. Going downwind he always raises the center board. If I could find one, I would buy it.
