Waterproofing Cabin's Hatchway

Earlier the summer we had a very heavy rain storm (5-6 inches in 3 hours). The following day I found the carpet soaked, the rear berth cushions wet and the bilge near filled with water. I'm not certain where the rain came in but I believe most of it came through the wooden hatch boards then down the steps to the rear berth and cabin floor. It seems the C-30 hatch boards are angled such that rain can leak throught the vent area and through the cracks between the boards. I also found water under the oven/stove area which could be from a different source. Do other owners experience this problem? Is there a good solution? I thought to add a piece of canvas which would snap over the hatch area, but that would limit the boat's ventilation.

hatch leaks

I have the same problem. Water comes through the louvers and also down through the trim joint and onto the edge of the aft berth. My boat is an '84 C30, don't know how long this has been a problem, but there is no damage yet. I have been looking for a plastic scoop to place over the louvers to keep rain out and at the same time not restricting the ventilation as you mention with a canvas cover. I also leave the bimini up all the time.

Added a canvas fly.

I just put a sun fly made from a piece of sunbrella over the boom. It has brass gromets in the corners and I bungie it to the base of four stantions. Wind blows through it so no vent problem and rain runs off to the gunnals. It has kept the rain out, protects my instruments mounted in the cockpit and preserves the hatch way brightwork by keeping the sun off. It takes two minutes to install and remove. works great lasts a long time. I also use the fly for a sun shade for the cockpit. I have developed the habit of moving 1/4 birth cushions forward to the salon. Putting them back is just another step in getting underway.

water

I think most of your water comes from inside the hatch . there are small holes in frount of the hatch that let the water drip out and over time they get pluged with gunk some water comes over the top of the hatch rails and gets the carpet other water gos between the fiberglass head liner and the roof of the boat and drips down the sides and in the storage space behind the seats I have a dodger so Im covered . but some times the doger is not up and I put acanvis over the top and pull it to the winches to leave air space and I have two solar vents .one in the head and one in the V birth JohnOlson

no hatch leaks

Our 88 Catalina 30 has a single hatch board cut from a tinted piece of 1/8 Lexon that completely seals out any water, [and we live in a very wet tropical area] True, it does not provide any ventilation, but it makes a great "picture window" and brightens up the cabin. It's also easier to remove and replace instead of three hatch boards. If we want better security when leaving the boat , the wooden boards are used and the Lexon stores on the quarter berth. The previos owner used just the hatch boards, and the cushions underneath were all rotted and needed replacing. good sailing Ron B

T - shaped vinal (sp?)

I had the same problem when I aquired my 83. I replaced all the cushions and then noted the extreme leak through the companion way. I made some measurements and cut a piece of vinal. Added some snaps and no more leaks. There are others on the list who have made the same shaped cover out of sunbrella. Now if I could just find the small leak in 2 of the windows.
