We need to replace the mast boot on our keel stepped mast. Has anyone used the WaterBoot mast boot on their boats? What was your experience? Is the WaterBoot fairly durable and how does it compare to alternative mast boots?

use an ace bandage

After trying various things, I read of a fix in one of the sailing magazines, tried it, and it works, all at low cost. Wrap an ace bandage around the base of the mast and the fixture where it passes through the deck. Paint the entire bandage with rubberized rope dip. I used an entire small can on my 28 footer. It looks ok, has lasted two years so far, cost only 10 or 15 dollars, and stopped the leaks. I did squirt a dollop of silicone in the mast groves. Wayne

Traditional rubber

My new to me boat has a keel steped mast. We completely cleaned and rebed the boot and it stays completely dry. But this looks much nicer and not expensive......love to hear peoples experience with it.

Cheap alternative

I use a piece of inner tube clamped around the mast and base collar and then covered it with a sunbrella boot. You put the inner tube about 4 inches up from the collar, attach a clamp around the bottom of the inner tube. You then fold it down over the clamp and clamp the other edge around the base. This both hides and protects the upper clamp. I also add a little caulk around the top lip in case water gets through the sunbrella boot. Tim R.
