Water Under V-Berth

Greetings, I just purchased a 1984 Catalina 30. I've been snooping around the boat and have notice that there is a bit of water under the V-berth, both forward and after of the Ronco B115 water tank located there. What's surprising to me is that there appears to be no drainage from this compartment to the bilge! Is this a correct analysis by me? Seems like a potentially dangerous design flaw (should the worst happen and this compartment somehow begin to fill with water. Am I missing something? Barry

Something is Leaking

Barry, I have the 88 model and when installing my depth sounder transducer thru the hull in the v-berth area, I noticed thatwater would not drain as well. However, I have yet to have any water enter this portion of the vessel. It sounds like your hatch, deck/hull joint, stanchion deck mounts or chain locker drain hose is leaking and weeping water down under the v-berth area. If you cannot repair it then at a minimum you can probably drain with a hose into and thru the locker to the bilge. Perhaps the lack of a drain here might have been to help keep the mast compression post from getting exposed to water. Bob

Check this!

We have a Cat 30, 1983 model. Similar construction as you mentioned. The overflow from the bow fresh water tank is a hose that goes nowhere. The overfilling of this tank puts water in that front area. Taste the water to see if it is fresh water. Check your overflow tube and you can extend it to flow into the bilge. Water inthe front compartment can also come from the anchor locker among other areas. Be mindful of that compression post as mentioned by another poster.

My Fwd Hatch

isn't sealing correctly (stripped out wing-nut), which may be the cause. Plus, I overfilled my freshwater tank the other day, which may also be the cause. Not real worried about the source, as much as the lack of any drainage. Guess I'll have to rig up a drain hose to the bilge (avoiding the compression post).... Thanks, guys.
