I just got a 27 ft Hunter with a 8hp Renault. I wanted to put a water temperature gauge in it and was wondering if anybody knew how to do that in-line. I've seen aftermarket products for cars where you can plug a gauge into the radiator line via an adaptor, but I'm not sure if such a thing exists for boats. The water lines on this thing are pretty small. I feel like I'd be a lot more comfortable motoring for extended periods if necessary being able to look at the temp- or is there some other obvious way to know when a diesel's running hot? I've never had a boat with a diesel before. thanks

Temp guage

Does this thing have a warning light/buzzer for water temp. If so you can install just about any guage that you can find, as long as it fits the hole where the sending unit for the buzzer comes out. Shouldn't be any major thing to do. Your local auto supply will probably have what you need.

Add tee piping and add a temperature sending unit hooked up to gauge on the water line in the block. Check the archives it has been done. Nick

The easy way out

If you just want to check the temperature once in awhile, how much hassle would it be to do it with an infra-red thermometer? I got one from Cabela's (online) for I think it was $28 or so. Just aim it at the water hose and shoot. Maybe it would be too much hassle to gain access to the motor, though.

Manny, I hope that's not a photp of your motor...

sadly it looks like it could use some scraping and painting.

Did you mean scrape or scrap???? ;D Yep, that's my inboard :( Hopefully the picture helps people understand why I have an 8hp Honda outboard as my primary engine. The picture was taken right after we bought the boat. I had sourced a new starter for it and wanted a picture just to make sure I documented the wiring for the new starter. The starter is the heavily corroded black and aluminum part of the motor. The engine actually looks a lot better now but I don't have a recent picture. Manny
