Hi HOW Helpers, I want to install an engine water temp gauge on our 2GMF (freash water temp). I am trying to ID the sending unit and gauge I need, as well as the water temps I should expect to see. I am told that the Yanamr parts are very expensive and that Teleflex and SW make after market stuff. Anybody out there have any answers to these questions? Thanks, Roger Mummah s/v Endless Summer (1983 Hunter 31 #58)

I installed a gauge on my H-34,

with a Yanmar 3GMF. I got a Teleflex gauge,275172, and sender,304857? (check the mounting size). Works great; the temperature runs about 160 degrees at cruise.

Roger - Last June I tried to respond to your request to let you know I have instructions, photographs and wiring diagrams which I can mail to you. Never heard back from the e-mail I sent to you. Send your address to roynjean@home.com and I will mail what I have. I think it is what you are looking for.

I replaced mine.

I recently replaced my gauge and sending unit. It had an aftermarket unit and gauge. I replaced both with Teleflex parts and have been very happy with it. It cost me about $50.00. Be sure that the sending unit and gauge are matched (same voltage). Your friendly neighborhood parts counter guy should help with this. the sending unit is located on the front of the engine in plane sight and it was very easy to work on. I would imagine that your engine will have a plug of some kind in its place. When installing the sending unit you have to be quick because coolant will be pouring out of the hole until you get it in there. mine lost about a cup, but then I'm fast as lightning:) Anyway I just screwed the new one in with no plumbers tape or sealant. It needs to make a good ground to the block so that stuff will get in the way. So far no leaks. I followed the instruction on the box to wire the gauge in. Very simple. I also wired the gauge so the light on the temp. gauge will come on when I turn on the light on the rpm gauge. As I'm sure you know the little rubberized switch on the front panel will turn the rpm gauge light on when it is put in the down position.("Illum") If you look on the back of the panel you will see that the switch has six terminals. When the switch is in the down position the top two terminals are hot. Check this with a tester to make sure it is the same on your boat. I simply ran a wire from the upper right terminal to the light terminal on my new gauge. Works great, and looks nice. I have one word of warning. The gauge on my boat was installed three or four inches below the panel. This makes it difficult to read unless you stoop down and get your head about even with it. (Its hard to steer with your head on the cockpit floor) When I recently replaed the gauge I even thought about mounting the new one upside down so I could see exactly where the needle was pointing. But in the end I figured everyone will think I made a mistake and not recognize my genius. Anyway, I would think very carefully about where you mount the gauge. Hope this helped.
