I is time to get ready to sail up here in Maine. Took the cover off today and decided to check a few things. I have never checked the water tank before and decided to do that first. There were two plates on the top of my tanks and I unscrewed them both. My water tank is seperated by a intank baffel. It is not completely sealed into two seperate holding areas. It look like it was intended to add strenth to the tank. What a mess in there. I believe the tank is stainless but when you look inside it is all pitted with growth inside. Has anyone ran into this? If so what did you to to fix it. I have no idea what to do. My first thought was to try to put some kind of blater in there but it is seperated in to two places. Any and all help would be great. Thanks MacS/V The Rose

Water tank woes

We own a 79 H30 and solved our water tank problem by removing it;D Seriously, the first time we did spring clean up we opened the cleanout ports and discovered the same pitting that you describe. Not only that but the inside was slimey. I don't know if that is attributable to the antifreeze or not. Now that I think about it I don't think we ever used the water tank. We had to cut fiberglass between the two hatches in the the bunk to get the tank out and we had to remove the clean out ports. It was a pretty tight squeeze. Initially we thought we would replace with a flexable water tank, but the guys on this site set me straight. We have decided to replace the one metal tank, which held 30 gallons with three plastic 15 gallon tanks as they meet the height & width requirements to fit through the cutout in the bunk without making any additional cuts. There is enough room to add a third tank to increase capacity. Hope this helps.

been there, done that

see the photo forum link. I went thru this last year. My 1981 37C has aluminum tanks which finally corroded thru. I put an epoxy coat in one and a bladder in the other. The jury is still out, but I think the bladder was the easier fix. You have my deepest sympathy. RS

Ron's fix.

My 1979 tanks are still holding, full of crap but holding. When they give it up then I will do what Ron did, cut them out and throw them away(Related Link). Ron found forty gallon tanks from Ronco to fit the two spaces. But I cannot tell you which model number. Hopefully Ron will report in on this. As an aside I think my tanks may be relatively clean because of the winterizing/dewinterizing. The tanks are empty except for a gallon of pink anti-freeze six months of the year. Then I use the clorox treament when recommissioning.
