any idea if water tanks need to be vented? and if so, suggestions as to where is a logical spot on a sailboat

the air displaced by adding water needs someplace to vent and conversely air needs to enter as the water is drained out. Doesn't make any difference where except it needs to be above the waterline where seawater cannot enter.

vents to a spigot in the head sink. Not sure why ericson did that but it prevents another hole in the hull. Tim R.

Sink vent

Tim - mine also vents to the sink and I like that system. It does mean one less hole in the hull and it also means that even in a knockdown, seawater is not going to get into your tanks. Overfill gets harmlessy dumped down the drain. I would guess those are the reason why our buidlers did that.

anchor locker

My Hunter 33.5 vents to the anchor locker. That is also where the water tank input is.

Mine is in the cockpit

I had to install a vent on mine...for some reason the boat did not have one for the 2 tanks I have onb my '78 Catalina 30. I ran 1 line up from a t from both tanks and it vents in the cockpit just above the drains. Its in a good spot because I could see it when I am filling the tanks. I like the idea of the anchor locker too....would considor that option verses others. ROb

On side above the tank

My tanks vent above the tank on the port and starboard. I have managed to get water out of the vents but it just runs to the bilge. The main thing is to get them high enough so that you don't lose water when heeled.

Flex tanks....

You did not mention the type of tank you have so just as an added note... if your tank is a flex tank, it does not need a vent. There are flex tanks on the market for fuel, water, and sewage. If you are using a flex tank for fuel or water, no vent is required. If it were a holding tank, a vent is necessary. Rick

Tank Vent

A rigid tank requires a pressure-relief vent, which should terminate in a downward direction and shall be covered with: (A) 16 mesh to 25.4 mm (16 mesh to 1 inch) screen or equivalent when the vent is in a protected area; or (B) A protective filter when the vent is in an area that is not protected from windblown dirt and debris. Bladder tanks used for water storage do not require a vent; but those for holding sewage must have a vent line so that gasses produced by decomposing sewage can escape.
