Water Tank Maint? (New Owner)

I recently bought an O'Day 23. There is not much original paperwork or manuals for it. I figured out there is a water tank for the 'galley', but I don't know where to fill it at. I do not know the last time it had water in it. What do I need to do to make sure it is safe to use?

On a related note: I've seen some mods where they removed the sliding stove and sink and made a permanent galley. Has anyone on currently done this? Any thing I should know about before trying this myself? Any plans and/or detailed pictures you're willing to share?

On several boats we've owned, over the last 25 years, we clean and dry out the tanks every fall. If your tank does not have a clean-out port, add one.
Clean safe drinking water is a Good Thing.

And what about the plumbing?

Although most people think only in terms of the tank, the plumbing is actually the source of most foul water, because the molds, mildew, fungi and bacteria which cause it thrive in damp dark places, not under water.

OS2Dude, post your message on the Oday Owners discussion board. There are a few sailors there who have made the galley modification you're talking about. I recall seeing some photos of a nice galley installation on an Oday 222 by Joe (Trinkka), who is a regular on that board.

By the way, we have an Oday 23 and have really enjoyed sailing her, but we always found her too cramped when we spent weekends on her. I removed the sliding galley to make more sleeping and storage room. I was planning to install a small permanent galley to make weekend trips more enjoyable, but in the end we decided to move up to a Catalina 30.

Sanitizing your water tank is a regular necessity! Just fill your tank adding a couple ounces of bleach per gallon until the tank is full. Then run enough water through your system to make sure the lines have the new mixture. Let it sit overnight and then empty your tank and flush it thoroughly! Doing this after the boat has sat for a while is essential. When in regular use, every couple months won't hurt. Keep your filler cap clean and soak it in a bleach/water mixture occasionally. A gravity filtering water pitcher (like a Brita) is a good idea for drinking and cooking is a good idea.
