Ok. There was a thread on another leak problem where we got on to this side subject so I thought I would start a thread specifically for this. Several of us have reported that our fresh water tank cover has been sealed with super-sealant. And that we can't break the seal to access our tanks for cleaning to save our ships.... I suggested using 3m's adhesive remover, and I tried it this weekend with little success (sorry Steve D). So, rather then ruin the hatch by breaking it since it will not let go of the seal, I have decided to go to plan b which is to install the largest screw-in access port I can find and put it in the center of the cover. This way at least I can clean the tank, which to the best of my knowledge has never been cleaned (I am the 2nd owner of my 28.5) Any thoughts on this? Mike

Two thoughts:

One: it's not necessary to access the tank to clean it. An annual or semi-annual recommissioning according to the directions in the article "Fresh Water Maintenance" in the HM reference library (on the forum homepage) is all that's required to keep your system clean. In fact, cleaning ONLY the tank isn't enough...90% of foul water problems are caused by molds, fungi and bacteria in the plumbing. Two: If you refuse to believe that and still insist on creating extra work for yourself by getting into the tank, screwing the lid down is a great idea...but put a rubber gasket under the lid to seal it. You can buy rubber gasket material from most hardware stores.

Don't give up

Just purchased a 1986 Hunter 28.5 3 weeks ago. Couldn't get the smell out of the fresh water, couldn't fill the tank either. After a great deal of difficulty finally broke the holding tank cover open after breaking a couple of screw drivers in the process. Install a 6" clear screw in inspection just like you suggested. However, Don't try it down the center of the Hatch! The bottom of the hatch has a re-inforcing rib of Fiberglass, Try the bottom or top have to stay clear of the rib.

Thank you Miss Peggy

I did the chlorine shock treatment this weekend as described in your article.. The strong foul oder has been replaced by a faint chlorine oder. Someday when I am bored I will cut in an opening in my stuck tank hatch.....but for now everything is hunky-dorey.

You NEED to get of the chlorine odor...

It means you haven't flushed all the bleach out of the system.. Give it one more good flushing out with plain fresh water, then run another tankful of water plus a gallon of white vinegar through it.
