Water Tank Clean-out

I want to clean out the water of my 1981 H33 and there appears to be no access port. Has anyone cleaned out theirs before - if so, how did you do it? The tank appears to be painted steel or aluminum and I was thinking of cutting in an access port right at the v-berth hatch. Has anyone done this already?

Mine might be similar

Hi Scott,

The setup on my 80 27' may be similar to yours. I have an aluminum tank in the v berth. It appears a previous owner put in a 4" access plate that is held in by a rubber gasket that expands as it is compressed by a wing nut on the top. It is the bright red circular object on the tank in the picture. I can get my hand into the tank with a brush and reach most of the tank. The hardest part to reach is the top of the tank. If yours is indeed aluminum and you can add an access plate, carefully inspect the tank for corrosion. Mine is on it's last legs and I have "painted" the inside with epoxy to try and get a few more seasons out of it.

hay Manny I recently cut may tank open and inserted a 30 gal "V" shaped blader with on demand pump ....enjoying boat big time. If you need starter or alternator I have a local old time auto shop who can fix you up... ....cheers frank

I installed an 8" Beckson port with clear screw top in the water tank on my 1983 Hunter 33 years ago. Has been a MOST worthwhile addition. I do a clean-up each fall. While you're there you can apply a coating to keep your pinholes from going through and make the tank good for the next 30 years. There is a baffle that goes across the tank at exactly the sopt where you want to place the port. No big deal at all. You WILL have a large, powered cutting tool in your hands after all. If the archives work you should be able to find the pictures I've posted previously, or I can re-post them if you need.

Thank-you all for the information. It confirmed what I wanted to do. I found your previous posts Sam - good picture. I have a brand new sawzall waiting to get its teeth wet.
