Water Stains on the Bulkhead

While preparing our 1985 Cat 30 for the winter, we removed the Port Side Interior cushions and noticed a large water stain and a small amount of wood delamination along the forward wooden bulkhead on the port side. The water stain is about 3 inches wide and travels the entire top to bottom port side of the bulkhead where the bolts are. We don't have a clue as to what is leaking. Also on the starboard side we have rusty brown water working its way into the 12 Volt lighting fixtures. None of the ports appear to be leaking. Any ideas especially re: the bulkhead would be greatly appreciated. Marc P

I have the same condition

Marc, I have a 1977 C-30 & the same thing is happening to my boat. I believe water is coming in through the bolts that hold the lifeline stanchions to the deck. I know it's been a while since they've been re-bedded & they are definitely leaking. Once I re-bed the stanchions I'm sure the leaks will dissapear. I'm not sure what to do about the stains, though. If they're on the fiberglass, you should be able to clean those easy enough. For wood stains (my boat has a few) I've been using wood stain from Boat US (red mahogany color, I believe) and it's helped a lot. The wood in my boat isn't in great shape to begin with, so it's not really important for me to match color & finish with the rest of the boat. I hope this helps. In addition to the stanchions, check the chainplates and rebed if necessary. If they haven't been done ever on your 1985, now's the time.
