I had a great sail on Saturday with my H216. It didn't look good Saturday morning. It was raining when I got up. It rained while I was trailering to the launch site. But it cleared up just before I got to the launch site. I rigged and launched the boat in a dead calm. The first 30 minutes was sailing was more bobbing than sailing. Then the wind picked up. I could see a line of thunder storms off on the horizon. I heard some traffic on channel 16 of my marine radio about a very sever storm cell and a report of a water spout (about 20 miles away from where I was sailing). I few minutes later, I saw on the horizon a water spout (tornado if over land). I don't know how long it was already in existence, but it kept its form for another 30 seconds or so and then dissipated. A couple of minutes later, it formed again for a few seconds and then dissipated again. It was quite a sight. Too bad I didn't have my digital camera with me. At that time, I decided that it might be prudent to sail away form the line of thunder storms, so I reversed course. The weather never got quite so bad where I was sailing but it was quite a rush to see the water spout. I got to try out my new trailer guides when I retrieved the boat. I did have to pull the boat out twice to get the keel in the track. I had placed the guides just aft of the wheels on the trailer. I'm move them just fore of the wheels and see if they work there better next time..

...in the Santa Monica, SoCal bay one year in their Tayana. Knocked them flat, the engine came off the mounts, cabinetry splintered and it was generally a mess they tell me. The rig was OK tho, but wet. We SoCal sailors don't know much about this stuff. Rick D.

Might have seen the same water spout

While sailing on my friends 40.5 Hunter just east of Pooles Island (Upper Chesapeake), we saw a water spout dead ahead on Saturday (8/27/05 around 11 AM). I was able to take a picture of it before it dissipated.

not same spout,

The one I saw was near the mouth of the York river in the lower Chesapeak Bay Saturday 8/27/05. I think it was around 1:00PM or so... They both might have been from the same storm system though....

Jeff is right

It was around 1 p.m. Saturday and from my vantage point on the York, it looked like it was right over Newpoint Comfort lighthouse. It drifted east over the Mobjack Bay, or so it seemed, and disappeared eventually. The skies cleared, the wind finally piped up, and we went sailing till 5. Such is the Chesapeake.

H216 - Location of Trailer Guides

Hi Jeff, Glad the water spout didn't get you! When convenient, it would be helpful if you could post the benefits, if any, of changing your trailer guides directly in front of the tires versus just behind the tires. Also, the position of the trailer guides relative to the sides of the boat (i.e. tight or loose). Thanks, Lamar

Trailer Guide Positioning

Hey Jeff, I have my H-216 trailer guides just aft of the wheels. But, I did a couple things. 1. I hot glued I/O carpet on the guides where the rub rail is so I will not wear the rub rail. 2. I adjusted my guides so, if the boat is perfectly centered on the keel rest, there is about one thumb width of clearance between the rub rail and the guide on each side. 3. And, most important, I reinforced the PVC guide so it was not so wimpy (I actually cracked my original guide). I went down to Lowe's and bought various diameter PVC pipe and placed one inside another. If I recall, I ended up with a nest of three different sizes. This significantly strength ed and stiffened the guides. With these changes, I now get the boat on the trailer first time every time. Because of the rub rail wear (even with the carpeting), I will often back back down in and pull out again to totally center the boat...but not always...depends on my mood, how far I am going to travel, how sharp my crew is, and the phase of the moon. But, I *never* miss the keel rest any more!

my guide position

The last time I used my H216, I had the guides a few inches aft of the wheels with an inch (or so) separation between the rubrail and the PVC post. Upon retrieval, there was too much separation (in my opinion). The boat was wondering a bit between the guides. This probably accounted for me missing the tract on the first retrieval attempt. For my next launching/retrieval, I've moved the guides as close to the wheel as possible (still aft) and tightened up the posts. Just in case I'm too tight, I'll bring my socket wrench with me to loosen them if necessary. I'll let everyone know how it worked out after I go sailing next time. Attached is a picture of the guide mounting I'm using. The PVC pipes are touching the rubrail...
