Recently bought a 1980 C25. There are some water leaks around the windows that I'd like to seal. Can this be done by removing the windows and applying a bead of clear caulk under the frames? Or do I need to replace the vinyl extrusion or glazing channel (see related link)? Thanks, Jack

Use both

The port is designed for that type of seal. Without it, it would surely leak. Best to replace the seal. But a small seal of caulk to hold the seal in place will serve as extra protection against leaks. Good Luck!

Remove the frames

I recently redid all the ports on my 79 C30. I found that the frames needed re-bedding very badly. I used Interlux Boat Bedding Compound for the rebedding. The frames were taken apart and CLEANED. The glazing and the vinyl extrusion , from Catalina Direct, were replaced. Use a very small bead of silicon in the bottom of the glazing. This will fill any voids and stop potential leaks. Also be very careful when you take the frames apart as they WILL bend if you are too aggresive with them. If you do all this you will not have any more window leaks.

harvey - What do you mean by "re-bedding"? I'm not familiar with that. Bill - As far as I know, the windows are original. They are fixed in place. Jack

Re-bedding

Bedding compound is a type of caulking. Anytime you remove and replace any hardware on your boat hull or deck you should seal or 'bed' the replaced item. As far as the windows or ports go there is a gap between the hull cutout and the window or port itself. I used the bedding compound because it never completely hardens, is waterproof and pliable for years to come. Just in case you ever had to remove the ports again it would not be a PITA as it would if you used something link 4200 or 5200 sealant.
