Water pump leaking

When I run my MD6B engine there is water dripping out of the hole at
the bottom of the shaft that connects the pump to the engine. The rate
is about one drop per second. When I replaced the impeller last year
the problem disappeared but now it is there again (100 hrs).

I noticed that the shaft is a bit worn out and don't see any special
rings or sealings that prevent water leaking out via the shaft, other
than the rubber of the impeller itself. Any ideas how to fix?

Hi Maarteen

There are two lip seals inside. They are 1" x 0.5" x 0.25" They need
to both be changed. The drip is to stop teh sea water going into the
engine so that is good. You may have to change the shaft as well if it
is too worn.

Cheers

Maarten, have you replaced the seals on the shaft? Check the shaft for
wear while you have it out. Apparently, if you can feel a groove with
your fingernail it needs to be replaced. Good luck. Trevor V2915

Hi Maarten
Its the water pump drive shaft seals. Mine has a worn shaft and so I have to renew them about every 100 hours to stop the drip - don't ignore it as the persistant drip of salt water is very corrosive on the rear of the engine.

To replace: -

Turn off the inlet seacock and disconnect the inlet and outlet hoses from the water pump.

Unfasten the two 13mm bolts which secure the whole pump assembly to the rear of the engine. The lower (inboard) bolt is very difficult to get at; I use a 13mm open ended spanner, which has had the stem cut in half, so it is only about 60mm long.

Remove the pump assembly, take off the front cover and take out the impellor & shaft complete, then prise the two seals out of the rear of the pump assembly and replace. The seals are type R23 - 25.4mm outside diameter, 12.7mm inside diameter, 6.4mm wide (1" x 1/2" x 1/4")

Reassembly is a reverse of the removal process and the only tricky bit is getting the slot in the end of the pump shaft to mate up with the male end in the back of the engine.
