I have a 1986 Hunter 31. This summer when we turn on the water pump, it stays on. I have checked for water leaks and can't find any. Could the pressure cut off be defective? Anyway to check? Any other suggestions as to cause? Thanks, Harry

Diaphragm in the pump has failed

The average lifespan of a diaphragm is only about 5-6 years. A kit will cost you about $12...just be sure you have the make/model/year (of the PUMP, not the boat!) handy when you order it. If it's still pumping water, it won't be for very long. For more information about water pumps why they run continuously when the diaphragm, why it's about to quit pumping water and how to recognize early symptoms, search the archives. This subject comes up regularly.

Buy a new one and rebuild your old one!

Harry: I would buy a new one. This will take care of your problem for now. Then you can either try to rebuild yours or send it back to the mfg. They will do an inspection and let you know if it is any good. If it's no good they will toss it for you. If it is rebuildable, they will do that and reship it to you. Then you have a spare when the new one fails in xx years.

Steve, you're certainly quick to spend...

other people's money! :) Water pump motors last decades unless the housing cracks and lets moisture in to corrode it. Otoh, diaphragms are degradable replaceable parts. The price of a new pump, plus the cost of shipping the pump back and forth to the mfr, plus their labor charge, adds up to close to $150. Otoh, a diaphragm kit is about $12 and anyone with just a LITTLE more mechanical ability than it takes to turn a doorknob--and can read directions--can easily replace it under an hour...only about twice as long as it takes to pull it out, pack it up, and take it to the post office.

Clogged tank outlet

Harry, I had the same problem on my 33.5. I thought I was out of water, had a bad pump or a leak. After checking for these problems, I disconnected the shutoff valve from the aluminum water tank and got no water there. The outlet was clogged with a buildup of lime, I think that is what it is. The pressure is fine now. Check that, Bob...
