The water line on my '92 Hunter is faded and I want to also change the color to navy blue. The fact that the water line on one side or another will
be under water for long periods will the Pettit or Interlux top side enamels
hold up?

Are you asking about your 'boot stripe' ? The bottom paint should be applied at least a few inches above the actual water line to assure protection while the boat is at rest. The boot stripe should be above the bottom paint and clear of the water surface at rest. The topsides above the bottom paint will not be affected by growth while sailing on either tack and producing a 'new' waterline while heeled over.

I use a Pettit product designed for bootstripes( http://www.pettitpaint.com/catalog_browse.asp?ictNbr=51 ). When I first applied a barrier-coat I painted right up to the bottom of the bootstripe. Then I used 1" tape below the bootstripe and painted it and the bottom with that tape in place. That left a one-inch grey stripe between the red bottom and the black bootstripe. But loaded for cruising forced me to put the anti-fouling up against the bootstripe.

go with Pettit. I used Interlux for the bootstripe and was not impressed with the application and chipping after relaunching the boat.
