ok ...i have aquired a 2gm20f engine to replace the old 2qm15 on my s2..... (wanted fresh water cooling on my boat in order to run hot water heater when away from shore power) and the extra 2 hp wont hurt either...... the old set up has a 1 1/2 inch inlet and outlet....i am almost sure the new one needs a larger arrangement.... 2 inch i think.....

my question is .....is a 10 inch round by 10 inch tall with 2 inch inlet and outlets enough or should i go larger ....will this be enough muffler for my conversion?.........

regards

Centek has a chart: http://www.centekindustries.com/choosemuffler.html . I had them make me a new muffler a couple of months ago. It is not a waterlift, just a simple straight through due to lack of space. But I have a large loop in my exhaust hose, from the bottom of the engine pan up to the cockpit sole.

Muffler manufacturers usually rate their mufflers for certain hp range with different specs for diesel and gas. Should be able to check the muffler rating against the model number on the manufacturers site.

Woody:

I would suggest that you have the largest possible exhaust on your system as possible. If you are 2" comming out of the mixing elbow that is what you should have all the way to the muffler.

Vetus Marine is a good source for water lock mufflers. Check them out.

http://vetusmarine.com/catalog.html (check approx page 56 -58).

Did you pick up this engine as a new one or used/rebuilt? The other advantage that you will gain is the loss of quite a few pounds. The GM engines are much lighter than those older models with probably much better reliability.

I am missing something here. . . I have a 2GM20F in my boat, but I don't believe I have a muffler (water lift or "regular") - I have a hose coming off the mixing elbow that just goes to the hole in the hull. . . should I have a muffler? what does a water lift muffler do? thanks in advance for putting up with my dumb questions. . .

it is a used engine and i am haveing to do some work on it but thats ok as i like to tinker with things like that ....i am still going through the 2qm15 and will have it up and running soon and will put it up for sail when i am happy with it ..... i was more concerned with the size of the muffler body in relation to the sound deading ...is the bigger the body the quiter it is?......

The water lift muffler number 1 is a muffler. for quiet. but it also provides a water lock to help prevent water that may come into the exaust from backing into the engine.

This often can happen in following seas or when anchored with the stern to the waves.
The engine can be lower that the hose and water can back up into the engine, not a good thing. It is a reccomended most sailboat applications because the boat can heal also and put the hose in a position to fill with water.

my boat presently is not equipped with a muffler - it was that way when I bought it this past Spring, and was probably sailed that way for the time the PO owned it - is this something I put at the top of the project list? (it's apparently safe to sail)

A really simple, tube style, fiberglass, water-lift muffler is made by Primex (try Google - Primex mufflers). It was recommended by Hunter Marine as a replacement on my 1980 H30 and I have a similar one on my 2000 H340. They come in a variety of inlet-outlet sizes and their smallest size is rated up to 50 HP. They are marked so that you install them with one side up to maintain the water lift effect. Here is one distributor: http://i-netmarine.com/mufflers/primex_round_silencer.htm

Fiesta;

There WAS a water lift "muffler" on your boat. It is possible it was lost along the way somehow. Mine is a pretty blue horizontal style thing that lays deep down in the V of the hull aft of the engine. On the 33 it is an awkward setup at best. I re-plumbed mine a couple of years ago to eliminate possible leaks in the old, orriginal wire bound hose, and just to clean up the installation. I used a fiberglass 90 degree elbow for the run up from the muffler to the through hull outlet. My muffler is kind of hidden away. Are you certain yours is not there?
