water leaks at compression post

I've been looking at some P42's. One had a good stain from leaks at the compression post/mast step. Can't see the inside without unstepping the mast so I can't tell what's going on in there. How easy is it to keep water out here? I see lots of caulk at the mast step on all the 42's I have visited. I thought there was a water trap of some sort. Help me understand what's going on with this setup. Thanx

found the KB

I found the Knowledge Base with the information on the mast step and much more. I don't know if it's just me but I've been on this site a lot and never saw that knowledge base before. Thanks to Terry and others who have posted there.

I have recently fixed this problem

Ted, I had this problem with water leakage you describe. After determining that water entering the mast was not getting out of the mast properly and was, in fact "overflowing" into the electrical runway into the salon, I solved the problem this way. First I removed the lower shroud on one side where it attaches about a foot above the base of the mast. With a small light and mirror I found about 6" of old bird nest material and baby bird bones. This material was continually blocking the drainage hole in the mast step, thus the water would build up and flow into the salon thru the electrical runway. I removed all this stuff with a piece of small hose attached to my shop-vac hose. Then I drilled a 3/8" hole through the mast and the mast step at the fwd edge to act as a better, more certain drain. Finally I put about 1/2 of a tube of silicon sealant up into the electrical runway from the underside. I tested this by running a hose into the shroud access hole and letting the water run a few minutes. No leaks! The damage to the sole is another problem and there are a number of solutions that have been posted in the forum. Bruce

Hi Ted. you are welcome. If you have...

any other questions I would be happy to answer them for you. We just love our P42...wonderful boat. We're in the planning stages of another two month cruise this coming season to Ocean Falls, BC. Probably seven boats going this time. Terry

Hi Ted, just checked my user profile...

and everything seems to be in order. Not sure why it did not go through. Terry
