I have a Hunter 29.5. (This could apply to other models) Has anyone had rainwater running down the wires in the mast into the cabin? I can see where it’s coming from and I’m not sure how to fix it. If you take off the wooden inspection cover around the post in the cabin ceiling, and look into the tube that supports the mast you can see water running down the wires. Do I have to take the mast down to repair this leak? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Hope everyone has a GREAT season!

I had the same problem with my hunter 340, I tried all kinds of caulking & sealing but nothing would stop the water running in, down the compression post & soaking into the plywood eventually I had to replace a section of the plywood under the laminate table top, once I had the table removed I also removed the compression post and the base plate the mast is stepped on top of the fibreglass cabin top, I resealed the plate to the cabin top & bolted it back in place & have not had a problem with it since, but you definately do have to have the mast removed.

As I recall from
my '94 29.5, the wires ran down through a curbed hole in the mast step fitting, down into the compression post in the cabin, and out a hole in the side of the compression post into the headliner. What I did was to create a service loop down in the compression post before the wires came out the hole in the side of the compression post, i.e. the wire bundle goes down into the compression post a couple of inches past the exit hole before coming up and out the hole. That way, the water follows the wire bundle down to the bottom of the bend and then drips down the inside of the compression post to the bilge. If you run your wires through the mast step and straight out the side of the compression post, the water will follow the wires into the headliner.

That was two years ago and still dry. There are several things to resolve that work together in causing water to leak into the cabin. Please let me know if you are unable to find the articles. Terry

I've heard of leaks everywhere on the 29.5 but not via the wires. I finally took to putting a line inside the 2-inch hole where the grounding wire comes out, and running it as a wick into a quart jug. God knows where the water is coming from. Some days it fills half-way and some days there's nothing. Also took to corking the holes around the cabin where holes feed into the bilge, and putting big sponges there to soak up rainwater and hose water. All this tends to keep the bilge dry.
