I have a small water drip coming out of a small hole in the bottom of the raw water cooling pump on my 1984 Yanmar 2GMF. The hole from which the water is dripping is about 1/8" to 3/16" in diameter. Does anyone have any idea what that hole is for and how do I correct the leak before it becomes a problem? Thanks in advance. Reg

Rebuild the pump. There is not much to it. Couple bearings. Couple seals. New impeller. new gasket. I did it in a couple hours.

Hardest part is pressing the bushing in and out. I used a socket and a vise easy peesy took about an hour.

Yes. I used a length of pvc and a hammer. Set the shaft end against a bench top, slip the pvc over the shaft to bear against the bearing and tap the end of the pvc with the hammer to slide the bearing off. I also used a wood block at the end of the pvc to tap on with the hammer so I had a good surface to strike. A new raw water pump is $600.00. The parts for the rebuild were about $75.00,.

I am going on memory here so I could be off base. It seems to me that there is a small plate about the size of your thumb nail that fits inside the pump housing. It is the little "bump" that actually compresses the impeller blades as they turn. That bump is/was held in place by a small screw that attaches from the outside of the pump housing. It is possible that the small screw backed itself out? Like I said, this is from memory of the 2GM we had in our 1985 Islander 28.

Had a similar issue with my 2GM20F and just replaced the water pump. European version is preferable to Japanese because it is about half the price.

Is it a weep hole like cars have. It's an early sign that the pump is failing. Not always the case as my Suburban pump bearing failed before it leaked.

Does anyone know who was the manufacturer of the pump? Since it is an external pump I am assuming it wasn't made by Yanmar.

Reg, if you are going to buy a new one, as opposed to rebuild it, check post #7 first.

I think the pump is a Yanmar part. If you contact a Yanmar service provider they can tell you what pump you have and need. European pump is about $250 and Japanese is $500 (may even be 300/600). The impellers are not interchangeable so that is one of the ways to tell the difference. I know all this because I keep a spare impeller and pump on board. Call First Mate Yacht services in St. Augustine, FL if you don't have someone local to you and ask for Bo.

We recently did a rebuild on the pump on our 1986 H31. Purchased rebuild kit from Marine Diesel Direct for about $140. Much less than $400-$500 we were quoted for a new pump. A couple hours labor and we're back in business!

Attached is the pump drawing.. it is an easy rebuild.. parts are cheap .. you'd want to change both bearings and the seal and the impeller.. Bearings are 6202, 2RS https://www.amazon.com/Sealed-Beari...8&qid=1474125165&sr=1-7&keywords=6202+bearing
The seal is a TC 13287 (13 mm ID, 28mm OD, 7mm thick) https://www.amazon.com/Grease-TC13x...d=1474124966&sr=8-2&keywords=Lip+seal+13X28X7
Impeller from Yanmar is part # 124223-42092 (edited to reflect correct part number).. The cover plate gasket is Yanmar 124223-42110 . or get impeller and gasket: https://www.amazon.com/Impeller-Replaces-Yanmar-124223-42092-124223-42110/dp/B0153P5KZQ
If you aren't comfortable doing the work, get a gear head friend to do it and pay him in good beers !
Cost.. bearings 18$, impeller and gasket $30, seal $9, beers $15= under $100
EDIT: Hole in pump is a "Weep Hole" to tell ya when the seal is shot..
WHOOPS.. forgot drawing:

Kloudiq1,
Thanks - that info is exactly what I needed. I already replaced the impeller and I have a new spare as well as 2 or 3 new gaskets. I'll get the seal and bearing and replace the old ones. Thanks again. Reg

Those impeller numbers don't exactly match the numbers I had for my 2GMF. ? Do I have different or??

When my raw water pump on my 1986 Yanmar 2GM20f began to weep, I first attempted to rebuild it. Supposed to be "easy." Parts are readily available and cheap. However....my pump was then was then about 30 years old, had never been rebuilt and, try as I might, I could not remove the shaft in order to replace the seal. Tried heat, tried PB Blaster, tried strap wrenches, etc., all to no avail. I then just bought a new pump from Depco (they are great to deal with) for a bit over $200 (European model). Perfect fit. I keep the old pump as a spare as it would still work in an emergency, leak and all.

OK, so I finally have the raw water pump off and on my bench. I have it apart to the point that the shaft with the bearings on it is out of the pump but the bearings seem pretty stubborn and I am not sure which way I should be driving them. I think the bearings should come off over the threaded end where the pulley goes but I would like confirmation from someone who has done it before I go ruining something.
