Water Jug on sail?

I was watching a video of a Holder 14 being rigged for sailing. The making the video had an empty water jug attached to the top of the mainsail, never said why she put it there. See pix.

Any ideas? My wife thought it might keep the mast from going under water in a capsize.

i lived on a 12 ft deep lake in college on which we sailed a Hobie and it was a bear to get the mast out of the mud bottom So did the same thing.

There are purpose made balls if you dont like the look of a plastic jug

I hoped that the ball at the top of my mast was a curiosity for non-sailors. I really appreciated it in the Spring.

Most ships are named for ladies, so jugs may be more appropriate than balls... which are fragile little things anyway.
