water intrusion in the steering quadrant compartment

I get a fair amount of water and other trash in this compartment despite trying to keep the small drain free and clear...and I was trying to think of a way to make tha access panel fit a little tighter. The other day in Ace Hardware I came across a "do it yourself gasket kit" (part#4035499). It has three seperate pieces of 6 inch x 6 inch squares of material. The thicknesses are 1/32, 1/16, and 3/32. I happened to like the 1/16 inch piece of cork gasket and cut it into 1x6 inch strips. I removed the quadrant access panel and placed the strips on the lip (I did not put any adhesive or sealant...I want to test if this works). The pressure from the cover holds the "gasket" in place. The access cover fits tighter and does not stick up above the deck. I'll follow up after a few weeks to see if it significantly reduces the water coming into this area.

Stephen, I'm eager to see if your solution works. My 99 C-28 mkII seems to collect water and random gunk as well. Water comes in through the cover, and the drain hole is a little too high for all of it to run out. Keeping the water out in the first place seems like the better way to go. Your option sounds like it might do the trick. Thinking of the design on mine, there's a little more of a gap where it tucks under the binacle, and I suppose that part of the cover might be harder to seal off. Definitely report back - I'll be interested in seeing your results.
