Water intake filters, 1980 H33, 2QM

I'm redoing the water intake system for my 2QM-15 - its run for all these years with no filter on the water intake system except the outside bronze slot-type screen over the intake thru-hull. I'm doing this because of age of hoses, etc. not any problems. My question is what sort of filter system (brand, size, etc.) do those of you who have a filter use, and what does the system look like with regard to above waterline loops, siphon breakers, and things like that. Mine has no siphon breakers, no filters, a straight run from through hull to pump - I leave the thru-hull open (I know, I know) all the time and have no problems. It seems to me that a above waterline loop with a siphon breaker would be good, but wouldn't work because of the vacuum necesary for the water pump to pick up water. Any suggestions welcomed.

What I would do.

I think my boat(H37C) is very similar to yours in respect to engine and thru-hull placement. 1 - while you are at it replace the 1/2"(probably) thru-hull with a 3/4" thru-hull and matching seacock. 2 - mount a Perko strainer(Related Link) on the bulkhead next to the engine with the outlet higher than the pump inlet. On my boat it is mounted on the starboard side and the pump is below the alternator on the port side. 3 - connect with appropriate hose and double s/s clamps. 4 - close that seacock and hang the engine key on the lever whenever you leave the boat. :) Edit: not sure why Related Link does not work. I did the same thing

I replaced all of the raw water parts on my 1980 Hunter 30 a few years back. I agree with Ed's suggestions, especially on increasing the size of the thru hull. On my boat, I used a 3/4" bronze slot-type scoop strainer for the thru hull and installed it with the openings facing aft. This has greatly reduced (almost eliminated)eel grass fouling on the outside of the thru hull and in the raw water strainer itself.

Ed, why above the pump?

My Perko strainer is mounted on one of the bilge bulkheads ( I think in the same bilge compartment as the electric bilge pump). What is the advantage/pupose of mounting the strainer above the level of the engine water pump? Scott
