Hi, please help me with following: on port of my first I have a problem with water bursting in inside of my boat. in bigger sea I can get in 1 hour app. 300 l of sea water inside. Is it possible that my outboard support can take so much water in if possibly poorly waterproofed or is it possible that after 7 years joint between upper and lower haul can be porous and is taking water there. I am taking water also when sea in not rough. when ever I am sailing. please advise what kind of sealant should I use or what should I do? My belief in good specialist has become very bad since these problems came after some specialist installed my engine carrier (so I was told since I own this boat only a year) thanks for all your post.

Novi, That is very much water and you should

try to sail with a friend that can look for the leak while you sail or motor. When you locate the leak you will have a better understanding of how to stop it. For seams that have become open, some of the poly urethane caulks are very good. If there is a fracture in the fiberglass structure then that must be repaired with fiberglass cloth and resin. (either polyester or epoxy)

Novi's leaks

Leaking around the outboard mount is pretty common. The motor is levered out fairly far from hull and puts alot of strain on a small surface area under the mount. leaking can occure from loose bolts, undersized bolts and or wollered out holes in fiberglass, improper sealing and lack of large "fender" washer inside of hull(on backside of mount). Sometimes mount has been changed by previous owner and when you take it off, you will see other holes which allow water in. If your mount area is leaking, you can reseal and beef it up at same time. If your transom is flat, consider making a backer board to go under the nuts where they come into the inside of boat. Cut a peice of 3/16 or 1/4 inch alum. plate into a square a few inches larger than your mounts base (around 10 by 10") Radius the corners of plate using a quarter to draw around and trim wih grinder or saw. Hold plate inside transom and have friend mark only holes being used with magic marker Buy new stainless bolts that fit bracket snuggly. get very large flat washers, then lockwacher and finally lock nut with nylon insert for iside boat next to plate. reseal both outside bracket and inside plate with 5200. Barely snug down and wipe off excess sealer. Second day tighten nuts rest of way. This will help keep bracket from flexing. (the corners of plate are rounded off so any remaining flex dosn't cause digging into fiberglass.

Lance, That is an excellant post but I bet

Novi would have less difficulty understanding it if you used standard english. I don't think that English is his first language.

My thoughts

I would think that the engine carrier (Outboard bracket) would not leak much when the boat is sailing as the transom does not see a lot of solid water, though i could be wrong. hat would be an easy place to start. ross has a good idea of having friend sail with you so you or him can dig around for it. With the amount of water you take in, I would think it would be easy to find.

Hear ye - Hear ye

This is probably obvious but if your boat leaks while in the water but not moving at all,the leak most likely is below the water line. Use a flashlight and take a long patient look at thru-hulls. Think back if you have hit anything and check inside hull in those areas. If the boat leaks only while moving, the leaks are probably above waterline. Respectfully offered for your considerstion from Sir Lancelot Snider,Keeper of my wife's castle,Lord of Zilch, Proprietor of Ye Old BS Boat shoppe of the round table by hearth.

leak

I have a 22 ft hunter 1985 sailboat that I got for Christmas, after I put it into the water, it is moored in the bay, each day there is water in the cabin. I pump 10-15 gal of seawater out of the hole in the floor below the sink every day, it also appears to be leaning slightly to the starboard side, we did not hit anything and the only visible damage to the boat when I put it in the water was a chip in the keel from the trailer and some of the gelcoat is worn off on the bottom. This is my first sailboat and I dont know how to find the leak, there are wood boards on the floor, water was lapping up on the starboard side from under the board, I removed it, both holes below the boards is filled with concrete - is this normal?? the concrete was not in one corner and I can see water in the boat flowing around - any advice would be great also, while moored should the keel be up or down? If I can get the boat to quit flooding I plan to take lessons, but first the boat has to be stable and I have to get new sails ( mine were stolen)...

If you have a trailor

I would pull the boat out and let it sit until the bottom, on the outside, dries out. Then, from the inside, fill the bilge with water and see where things get wet on the outside of the bottom. if that doesn't do it, let everything dry out, put the boat back in and spend a day watching the bottom from the inside. You ought to be able to spot something.

Check out your bilge hose. Does it have a loop in it. I once had a friend who installed a bilge pump and hose. He did not put a loop in the hose. So when he did a hard motor he took on water. Also, when he had a good sail going he took on water. But only when the the bilge hose opening was under water. Good luck.
