Water in V-berth....

Still discovering new areas of our vessel.... I was looking for our extra PFD's for some guests that went sailing with us this past weekend, and reached into the storage areas under the V-berth, and discovered about 2 inches of water. Is this area suppose to drain into the bilge? I pushed my head in as far as I could, and could not see any holes that would allow this water to move into the bilge area. Plus, I am at a loss as to where the water is even coming from. With recent rains I figured it might have seept down from the anchor locker. I sponged it out, and will check it out again this weekend, but was interested in why this does not just drain to the bilge area between the port sink and starboard shower area? Thanks for any explainations or experiences with this ahead of time! Paul s/v The Regina Avery

Check These

I found that the wires running thru the deck, to the bow rail for the bow light, tend to leak if not properly caulked. and the latch handle receptacle on the right side of the anchor locker also may leak, use a sealant in that hole, then leave the handle unlatched til it cures. I found both of these spots allowed water into the v berth area.

Check your anchor locker

BP: Check the thru hull fitting on the anchor locker and the hose too. The thru hull may be cracked or the caulking has given up the ghost. The drain hose and clamps may be on their way out.

V-berth drainage

Drainage in the H34 is very bad! There seem to be few limber holes between the various regions of the hull and the bilge. You will find water trapped in various areas - notably in the dinette area. Drainage in the V berth area seems to be particularly bad. It seems that the teak & holly cabin sole sits in a dished pan in the liner that has no drainage. If any water gets under the sole it stays in the pan until it evaporates - I found the hard way when it did a job on the teak & holly! I agree with the previous replies: I had a real problem with leaks at the entry of the wires for the bow lights on the port side. Derek

Thanks for the suggestions!

I appreciate all your words of wisdom. This is the greatest website to find out and share information. I hope I can reciprocate based on my experiences as well. I will check out all areas mentioned, and chase the infamous leak down. Thanks to those that replied, and to HOW.

A little work avoid hassle

I ended up cutting through the bottom of my sump liner to reach the true bottom.A8x8 inch square was enouph to allow for a sump w/o compromising liner integrity, this made it possible for me to use a wet dry vac to dry out the true hull & trace all leaks.Good luck.

chocks

i have a 1982 36' but i found leaks through the bolt holes for the forward chocks. it was not until my starboard chock broke in a storm and i later removed it and sealed it, temporarily, with electrical tape, and found the moisture in the foc'isle almost disapeared. good luck and i hope 36' info applies to you too.

Mine was from the anchor locker

I had the same experience and replaced the caulk in the anchor locker which has taken care of my problem.

V-Berth Leaks

I am presently attempting to trace a leak into the v-berth of our 340. Occurs under sail. Have sealed the aft anchor locker bulkhead just under the deck which did not stop the leak. Was wondering about the hole for the anchor locker latch bolt as mentioned by Derek. I have also found gaps in the sealant along the hull/deck joint inside the anchor locker which I have now sealed. Waiting for the sealant to cure so I can do the test routine. I too had water trapped under the teak/holly floor. Drilled through the floor pan allowing the water to drain into the bilge. The bedding compound under all the deck fittings appears ok therefor I don't know where to look next.

V Berth water from FW Tank?

I have a 336 not 340,with no problems. Ihave however chartered two dikfferent 336s with the subject v-berth water problem under the sole. My thought is that it is related to the fresh water tank. The last time it happened I specifically watched for the problem prior to and after filling the tank. It definitely showed up just after filling the tank. However, I never could find the exact cause. And, fortunately my current 336 doesn't have the problem.

check the bow deck plate

I bet you have water in another place that we never check...at the front of the foward berth is a deck plate...when removed and using a suction, I can get almost a gallon of water that seeps thru the anchor well! Just stands there...noticed it first on a dewy morning that had moisture all around except for this 8-inch section on the bow...never seems to be a problem but I suction it out twice a year!
