So I'm getting ready to cast off the dock lines within a week or two. In getting the outboard prepped today, I unscrewed the bottom screw for the gear oil to drain it. Before the oil drained, I got about a dozen drops of water first. Never happened before. I'm assuming that the gaskets I bought to seal those screws didn't fit right, and that's where the water entered. Seems intuitive to me, but is there anything I might be missing? Any more serious issues that might need more attention than new seals on the screws? Engine is a 5 horse, 2 stroke Nissan.

Water in the Bottom End

Look very closely when the screw is removed as sometimes the old washer stays in the bottom end. When you add an additional washer, water is the result. The washer is usually clear so may be very hard to see. Happens all the time.

Shaft Seal

Ben- You might have a shaft seal gone bad. Fish line is the usual suspect in this case. Rob Hessenius

On further inspection -

The washers were pretty torn up, mostly because they weren't the right size. A little too big. Chalk it up to a lesson in being more assertive - they didn't look like the right size when I got them, but the guy that I bought them from is a Nissan expert and I assumed they'd be ok. I'll make sure I'm the ones that go on this season are better.
