Hello I am interested in buying this 1974 catalina 27. Everything on the boat is in good condition, the motor is the inboard diesel and it runs good. The one concern i have is the water in the bilge. You can see it here http://www.joshuabryden.com/gallery/content/Artistic/boat/DSC01563.JPG Can somone tell me if this is common in the 27 inboard? Or is this a major deal breaker? THe guy is asking 4k for the boat, if you want to see more pictures i have them. Other than this water / oil sludge the boat is beautiful and i would love to make her my own. I would greatly appriciate the assistance thank you in advance contact : josh@joshuabryden.com

Water

Any inboard is going to have some water in the bilge...unless the boat has one of the new dripless stuffing boxes. Can you tell where the water is coming from...stuffing box, rain water from interior leaks, refrig drain, thru hull leaks, etc.?? The bilge looks rather dirty, but I'd expect some water there. $4k sounds cheap for a C27...check here for more prices to use as a comparison: http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listing/cache/pl_search_results.jsp?currency=USD&units=Feet&currencyid=100&slim=ywpbs&man=Catalina&slim=ywpbs&sm=3&cit=true&

Thank's Bert

The water does appear to be coming from the engine compartment as you can see in this photo. (look under the engine) http://www.joshuabryden.com/gallery/content/Artistic/boat/DSC01567.JPG The boat does have a refridge and some minor cracking around the windows. 4k seems low to me as well so I am weary about her water problems. Do you(or anyone else) have any tips on how I can detirmine if it is the old stuffing box or a thru-hull leak? I have many more pics of the whole boat if anyone is interested. thanks again.

You definitely got something goin' on

there besides normal packing gland seepage. I've got a '74 w/outboard, so I have a dusty dry bilge, but the oil in the water tells me something besides our delta river water is going on there. I'd make an offer "subject to survey", and have Ladd's haul it so you can have Peggy or another surveyor take a good look. 4K is very reasonable if the boat is generally in good condition. Which boat is it? I'd be happy to take a look at her and give you input if you want. Contact me for more info on the C27 and SSC. Project Boat

Before my wife and I invest a lot of time in a boat while boat hunting we check two areas as soon as we board. She checks the head and I check the bilge.....if the head or bilge is dirty we get off the boat and keep looking.

Appears to be way too much oil in the picture,

but the engine mounts look very new, something happened or is happening that is not at all good.

Oil

As previously mentioned, there does seem to be a lot of oil in the bilge. Maybe a bad engine oil leak or maybe the PO changed the oil and did not clean up his mess. One way to check for leaks is to put a chalk mark down stream from the thru hull...if water crosses the chalk headed toward the bilge, you'll be able to see it very easily.
