if you have an inboard engine with a shaft, then there is a good chance the water comes through the stuffing box. Check it- if necessary add grease- there should be a grease nibble (though I don't know what stuffing box you have). If you see a lot of water coming out of the stuffing box, you might need to replace the 0-rings (and bushing) from the stuffing box.

Hi Bruce,
Give it a taste test.
If it's salt water it's a leak somewhere. If you have an outboard,
maybe the old prop shaft hole was not properly plugged. Check around
all the thru hulls for wetness. Maybe a leaky hose (although the thru
hull valves should be off when you're away from the boat). Check around
any thru hull transducers: depthsounder, knotmeter, etc.
If it's fresh water your water tank, or fresh water lines probably have
a leak.
Our boats are so well designed that all water getting in will end up in
the bilge, even water tank leaks and condensation.
The bilge drain plug in my Series I boat is right near the bottom of
the bilge on the port side. It's hard to see from the outside as it's
usually covered in several layers of bottom paint, but you can probably
feel it if you rach down into the bilge .... unless you have the Series
II / III with the fuel tank down there.

Hi Bruce;
that tells me you don't have to worry about the stuffing box (and I hope the stearn is properly closed.)
You should have a drain plug, even though you're in San Diego, but it may have been painted over.
There are many places water can get into the boat (and end up in the bilge). If it hasn't rained for a long time, then it may be condensation.
I suggest to have a automatic bilge pump, then you don't have to worry. (Pump with a float switch)

Hi Bruce

I don't know if the Series 1 has the same small drain holes in the
after deck that are on my series 2 - these are just inboard of the
rear mooring cleats.
If yours does, check that they drain outboard. Mine are connected to
the main cockpit drain pipes by the simple means of pushing the small
bore flexi pipe coming down from these drains into a hole cut in the
top of the main cockpit drain pipe. Just take a look down the stern
locker to see what I mean.
Most of the condensation that forms on the side decking in the early
morning runs down to these small drain holes and if they do not drain
outboard, the water will end up in the bilge. One of my small bore
pipes came loose and fed condensation water down into the bilge for
ages before I traced the cause.

Aha!
That's how Albin Marin dealt with those annoying puddles that form by
the rear mooring cleats of the Series I boats. Thanks David.
I would guess they're similar to the cockpit hatch drains that run
out on either forward corner of the cockpit floor.
Does anyone have a picture of these 'mooring cleat' drains they can
post on the Yahoo site?

Have posted photo of the drain holes (see under 'Little Star') - they
are small and frequently get blocked up with crud. Also posted photo
showing how the pipes from these holes are fed into the main cockpit
drain pipes.
When I hauled LS this year the sterngear was covered in barnacles and
other difficult to remove marine growth that must have cost me at
least 2 knots. This was despite several coats of antifouling specially
made for sterngear which had simply rubbed off with the friction of
the rotating prop.
So this year I got hold of some copper powder and mixed this in with
epoxy resin to make a thick goo and painted this on. Fairly wizzed
around the marina when she went back in! Will let you know if this has
made any difference when I snorkel down later in the year.
