Just noticed a small amount of H2O in the bildge. I assume all boats have a bit of moisture below. Is the bildge expected to be dry or is this just the way it is? Comments...

Depends

Bigger boats tend to get more water. It comes from every part of the boat. It happens when it rains, and when washed. Just sponge it out and towel dry, often.

Check all thru hull fittings

You can always get small leaks in these areas. The important thing is to get to them sooner rather than later. Also any stem packing you may have should be checked, rudder, prop shaft etc. I own an older vintage Hunter 27 and I always seem to have a little water. Rain, cleaning and my ice box in the galley also drains to the bildge. Checking on a regular basis is the best bet. Peter

is it salt or fresh water?

Is it consistant or only after certain activities. some folk will lay a little talcum powder around the inside of the hull to try and dectect which direction the water is coming from, then trace it back. I was getting water in the bilge occassionally after sailing. I thought it was coming in from out side, but it turned out to be a leak in the fresh water tank's vent. I noticed this because I let the tank run dry and the leak stopped, when i filled it up the slightest heeling left an inch or so in the tiny C27 bilge.

HI, PAUL. If your boat is a keel step mast with any rain the rain water comes down the mast into the mast step and runs into the bildge. There is always some water in the bildge I am live close to my boat and I on it every couple of days and I check it every time. Frederick Pierce.

Keeping water out is tough.

Your boat lives in it. Since the day mine was new I wanted a dry bilge. It never happened until last year after we rebuilt her. Finally. But then last week we were re-commissioning the watermaker with all new stuff and it leaked. Damn. Anyway, live with your boat, follow the ideas the guys have suggested and have fun hunting. On my web site, I allude to my dry bilge fetish. Even ran the refer/freezer drain up to the shower sump. It's all working. Even when it rains. Yes, it was good for me. :)
