I have an Oday 22 - 1978 completely restored and upgraded beyond belief and well maintained. I have a problem when I sail for a period of 4 hours or more I accumulate water in the compartments under the port and starboard berths. I have checked repeatedly for water from the bilge of the the cabin deck but there is no way for the water to travel from the bilge to the storage compartments. I must say I have healed 20 degrees at times during this period but never, while sailing has the water gotten higher than the rub rail. Can anyone share a similar experience or tell me where this water is coming from. It works out to be aprroximately a gallon or two on each side, but if it is condensation it sure seems like alot to me. Not to mention that the air temp was 82 degrees and the water temp was 85 degrees. The difference in temerature should not produce that kind of condensation. Any help will be appreciated

Any through-hull fittings you may have. Also, a problem I recently had, during the recent hurricane I got some water in the bilge, perplexed the hell out of me. Then I was going for a sail and the rudder felt a little loose. After some inspection I found that the bolts for the lower gudgeon on the rudder were loose. Took the bracket off, recaulked and tightened down. While in calm water the water wouldn't get in, but while motoring or sailing, the fitting is low enough to the water to allow some water in. Good luck!

Did you remove the rubrail, unscrew the deck/hull joint, dig out the old caulk and reseal the deck/hull joint during restoration?

Through-hull fitting
Dear Keith, I had the same problem. It turned out to be the through-hull that drains the sink. It's a plastic or nylon fitting, and it looked OK, but when I took the hose off it and examined it closely I could see it had a crack in the part that the hose clamped to. When the boat heeled over water came up into it and leaked into the storage area under the port bench. As it is a couple of inches above the waterline, and only submerged when heeling over, I was able to make the repair at the dock; removing the old one, scraping the area clean, and calking in a new one that my local boatyard just happened to have in stock. As mentioned in a prior post the rudder fitting that's below the water line ( !!! ) could also be the culprit. Good Luck. Frank

Hi Keith: First, test the kind of water that is leaking isnto your bilge. Is it seawater (salty) or fresh water? If it's seawater, you probably have a through-hull fititng at the sink waste pipe or else where that is the culprit. If it's fresh water, it might be the fresh water tank spilling or leaking it's contents. Did you get alot of rain down there in Louisiana? Perhaps it's rainwater that;s trapped below the cabin deck and appears when you are healed over. I have a '79 with a 5 or 10 gallon tank of water just under the cockpit floor. That area of the hull might have access to the hull areas that are under the berths in the cabin. Rainwater gets into my boat through various window seals and other through deck holes and collects in my bilge in the cabin. The hull's solid, but the deck leaks. I have heard that the cockpit drain has a tube between the fitting you see in the cockpit and the spot where it exits the transom. You can feel the tube if you reach way down and aft thru the starboard lazarette. The transom thru-hull will only be submerged when you're on the boat, normally rides higher/ above the waterline if the boat is unoccupied. Could be you took on water only while you were aboard, if this is the source of the leak.

standing water?
I have a 25 and I discovered that water sits on the hull in the storage area under the cockpit not draining fully into the bilge. This would also cause water to slosh about under the berths. In my case it is only a about a cup or so. I plan to build up that area with more glass when I install my new water tank.
