Water in bilge

I have owned this boat since September 2006. I have had very little water in the bilge. Last week I ran aground in the channel. It was pretty rough out and I got bounced around pretty good. I was able to eventually motor my way out. Now I am having a slow but steady filling of the bilge. Where should I be looking for the problem?

Keel/hull joint

Somewhere along that joint would be the most likely spot. I guess I would particularily look closely at the forward and aft sections of the joint as those spots, seems to me, would be where most of the stress was born as your boat bounced around. I think I would call a surveyor on this one. Seems to me that this indicates some possible damage to the integrity of the keel bolts. Good luck and keep us posted.

Leak

First thing I would do is check the keel bolts. Make sure they are all tight. Since you didn't say what kind of boat it is, am just assuming it has a bolt on keel, but most of them do. You will have to get the torque specs from somewhere, but around 100 to 120 lbs. works for many if not most.

I think that if you read many of the posts, you will see that the time a post is written it defaults to Pacific Standard Time (or daylight saving time). I have not found any way to change the time preference. The time right now is 7:33 EDST.

All bolted on keels leak at sometime or

another. Nothing to worry about. I have a couple of questions: 1. Do you have a keel stepped mast or deck steeped? Keels steeped leak more than deck steep but both can leak. 2. Does your packing gland drip? How much? Lots of water can be coming in the packing gland. 3. Are the keel bolts or keel joint leaking? Here is how I test the leek bolts and joint. a. pump all the water out of the bilge. b. sponge dry the bilge . c. Spray scrubbing bubbles and look for water running in the foam. You'll be able to see the leak if water is coming. MAKE SURE YOUR BILGE PUMP IS WORKING! I recommend dring the bilge real good then sealing the area with 5200 to retard the water flow into the bilge!
