Is there a valve on the water tanks so they can be cleaned and flushed? What is the best procedure for this? Are there chemicals to add? Thanks mdouglas-okc@msn.com

I don't believe so

HI Mike - I don't know for sure, but I don't believe that there are drains for the stock water tanks on the Catalina 30. Best to empty the tanks via the pressure faucet(s). Trevor

Use a small hand pump

If you feel the need to empty and clean your fresh water tanks, I suggest using a hand pump and bucket. I wouldn't want to run the electric water pump that long for fear that it might burn out. I don't empty my water tanks, except by regular use. I add a capful or two of bleach every few months to keep the water smelling clean. I find that that kills the bacteria. I do not drink the water that is in the tanks so don't see any health hazard in doing this.

RE: Water tanks

When I drain the tanks I disconnect the supply line to the pump and let it drain into the bilge. Then excercise both the electric and manual bilge pumps. Take the time to read read the articles on water tanks in the expert forum by Peggy the HeadMistriss. Wealth of good information.

drain em, open em, wipe em

We drain, either through the previously mentioned methods or just when we run out, (showering is a really good way to accomplish this), then my wife with her small arms reaches inside the tanks and wipes them out. We liveaboard and so drink the water in our tanks. All our water is either directly collected rain or pumped from tanks filled by the rain. We filter it going in if from a tank. We still end up with some growth and sludge. We only put bleach in if we are leaving the boat for any length of time.
