Hi, I bought this boat a year ago and the hot water heater was not there but all the domestic water lines were in place and all tied together. I would like to install a new water heater but don't know where to tie into the engine cooling system for the heat exchanger. The engine is a Universal diesel 5416 of 16 or 18 hp with fresh water cooling via a heat exchanger. If anyone has this engine, would you stear me in the right direction. Sure appreciate any help. If there are hot water lines to faucets on the boat, look for a hose coming off around the thermosat and going somewhere outside of the engine space or possibly just looping back to another connection around the water pump. These are probably your engine-side connection points for a missing water heater. Or, you could trace a hot water line back to it's termination point (where you said they appear to be all tied together) and look around for a heavy duty hose that's splice together in the area where a water heater might have been. It's unlikely that whoever removed the water heater would go to all the trouble to remove the engine hoses as well.

Hot water

An expensive alternative, would be to add a diesel fired heater like the Webasto TSL-17. with this you can heat water without running the engine. There is always the chance that your engine will not produce enough heat to adequately heat the water.

Hot Water

There should be a small hose (1/2" ID, or 5/8" ID coming from the water pump (the one driven by the 'fan' belt on the front of the engine), and another from the engine side of the thermostat. These may be plugged, or if there are hoses like this they probably go to where the water heater used to be. The water heater will have a 'hot' engine water connection, and a 'cold' connection (not the connections to the faucets). The hot water would be the hose coming from the water pump (on the engine), and the cold one would go to the thermostat connection. I just finished installing a new Force 10 hot water heater in my boat because the old one was 14 years old, and the timing was convenient (I pulled the fuel tank to inspect the bottom for pin holes).

Worth doing

I replaced my 6 gallon Raritan last year with the same model. Mostly because the old one was rusted, ugly & a mess in the lazarette. New one w/plastic jacket & all nice new insulation heats up great w/short run of the engine & stays hot/warm until AM dishes, after doing PM dishes. Yanmar 3GMF 20 hp. Totally worth doing.

Check the West Marine Advisors in the

WM catalog, which has a very good schematic piping layout, including the check valve required at the hot water heater.
