Water Heater Reset Button

I have a 1996 Hunter 280. My little girl and I are currently living aboard and traveling the Great Loop - having a great time! But this water heater is driving me crazy. Seems like every time I want to take a shower or have to wash dishes - when connected to shore power - I have to dig in the hidey hole and press the little red button on the water heater.

What's up with that? Is it something I'm doing wrong?

I ask this as I am once again sitting waiting for the water to heat up:cussing:

had a similar problem on my H410 last year. the red button is an over heat cutout. I replaced that and the thermostat on my Seaward WH ($20 from Seaward) and all is well.

Thanks for your advice. Regarding the thermostat.... does it help regulate the temperature. Our water gets so hot it's almost dangerous. I can't even let my little girl use it without my help.

Mary, is the temp too high when heated electrically? Maybe the thermostat needs adjusting (I prolly have the same setup as you but I have not needed/used the electrical heaters so I do not know if it is adjustable or not). If it gets too hot from the engine, you may have to restrict or partially bypass the lines to the heater from the engine.

I have a similar problem on my H376. It turns out that the engine thermostat is set at a higher temperature than the overtemp stat in the Seaward. This means if we have been motoring hard for some time the domestic water gets to a higher temperature than the overtemp stat on the immersion heater in the seaward and trips it.
We have no way of knowing the stat has tripped and sometimes it is days later when we discover this and only then when we next plug into shore power and switch the heater on - with no results.
Then we have to delve into the locker and operate the red button which, incidentally, is not visible nor easy to do.
Now we just live with this occasional problem.

when connected to shore power the thermostat turns off the electric element when the water hits a preset temp. so yes it might get overly hot, at least until the over temp sensor trips. I've not had the problem with the over temp tripping while motoring.
