I have been reunited with my boat in Kaneohe Bay and I managed to replace my ignition without ordering a new instrument panel. However, I have a new challenge that I am working on and I could certainly use some advice. Here is what I know:

Dimensions:
15.75" Deep
13" Wide
13" High

Access to area through two separate 13.5" openings.

The hoses from the engine are in the back of the unit and the remaining components are on the front (facing the rear of the boat).

Here are my questions:
Is this a 3 or a 6 gallon unit?
Does this have a front or rear heat exchanger?
Is Seaward the best brand for the money?
Do I need a 120 VOLT/1500 WATT?
Are there any special removal/installation requirements?

Do a little more recon Marine.:) The plate on the unit will say if it is 3 or 6 gal. But by the size it looks like 6. The brands all cost about the same and I think you will find that on a boat the size of something may limit what brand you can use. If the old engine hoses look at all supect now is the time to change them. Just make sure you bleed all of the air out of the engine cooling system after you install the new unit.

Good luck.

I can listen to Marine jokes all day - keep'em coming. The photo of the plate was a blind shot with my arm stretched out; I will not be able to read the plate until I remove the unit. Which leads me to my follow-up question, can I remove the water heater and still run the engine? I am guessing that as long as I leave the water pump off I should not have to worry about too much water from my holding tanks by I have no idea what to expect when I remove the hoses that connect to the engine coolant. Speaking of which, is that a common configuration to have the engine coolant connection in the rear of the water heater with the remaining components/hook-ups in the front?

I appreciate any advice or suggestions...Thanks again.

You can run the engine. Disconnect the water heater hoses from the engine. Take a short piece of hose and connect one end to the engine out and the other to the engine in. Forms a bypass loop that allows the coolant to continue to flow in the engine. If you are old enough to remember woking on cars, it was the same way we used to bypass the heater core when the hose for the heater broke.

Both my old H34 and my current boat came with the same heater, a 6 gallon Seaward. The demensions for the 6 gallon water heater listed on the Seaward site was 13X19X13. Close. And the electrical is optional. West Marine no longer carries Seaward, so you may have to order the part.

Glad to see you are back!

Here is the link to Seaward Products. There are two different models so you should be able to figure out which one you need.

Practical Sailor did an spot on water heaters some years back. I really don't think that there was a lot of difference between the comparbily priced units.

It is a six gallon tank and it is installed exactly like my own. I replaced mine when I installed the new 3YM30. Interestingly there was a dark circle indicating that the original might have been round and that I was replacing the second tank.

You do not need to connect 110v unless you want hot water at the dock without running the engine. My Yanmar really makes hot water but not sure how long it takes. Certainly less than one hour.

And Karl is right about connecting the in/out. You could just use the hoses that are there and connect them together with a nipple.

You might do the same with the two hoses on the aft side of the tank, the cold water in and the hot water out. If you connect those together with a nipple you will be able to use your water system with cold only.

Is anyone else out there having web problems? The link to Seward in Steve's post would not work. I have not been able to get on "hotmail" for two days. When I key the address for Google the Windows Internet Explorer does nothing. Other sites like this one and Weather come right up. Has the virus got me? I am typing this on my wife's wired laptop. My laptop is right next to this one with wireless with the same results. I just tried Google again and got: "Internet Explorer cannot display webpage".

Ed,

I'm not a computer person by far, but you may have just had an "Update" from Windows:cussing: and it will sometime set everything to what Redmond WA thinks is best instead of what Huron OH wants.

Get the one that matches your existing one. The less you have to change the better.

Nevermind, I just answered my own questioned with the help of Steve's link. I need a water heater with a rear heat exchanger to mount the new water heater with the same configuration as my old one...Thanks again everyone.

Bobbashaw: A friend did a H37C with the 3YM30. He got the engine at their cost. The TOTAL price was about $14k. He needed a new strut, prop, shaft etc.

Be sure to get a "good" prop from a prop shop (not the installing dealer).
