Water heater/heat exchange

I am replacing my old Force 10 11 gallon water heater on my H460. All the hookups looked straightforward until I came across the below. What exactly is this metal thing connecting the hot water out and the heat exchange inlet/return? I’m assuming it is closed off inside or my coolant/antifreeze would pollute the fresh water. Came seem to find any info on this thing anywhere. Thanks in advance.

From the manual it appears that is a temperature control valve. It should close the valve preventing coolant flow through the water heater when the hot water reaches a preset temperature.

And yes. There should be no interconnection between the fresh water and coolant sides of the valve.
Ah thanks. Makes sense seeing that. I guess the new ones just don’t have it. I’ll add a mixing control valve myself. Thanks a lot.

A mixing control valve will function differently. A mixing control valve will mix cold potable water to the hot potable water to prevent scalding. The temperature control valve shown in the manual will prevent the potable water from getting that hot to begin with. It does appear that others have gone through what your dealing with. (I’ve attached one link below). Without the temperature control valve make sure you test the temperature/pressure relief valve fairly regularly.
