Any ideas on replacing the water heater on my '89 Cat 30? Should I cut an access in the fiberglass under the companionway ladder? You would have to cut out all the way through the top lip to get the old one out. Would this weaken the hull? Thought about mounting on the deck of the aft berth? In the lazzarette?.......Help!

No cutting required

Otie, I did this about 4 years ago and it didn't require any cutting on my 87' 30. I did have to remove the platform under it before it would come out. It should be easy though just a hammer and a screw driver is all thats needed. After the platform is out and anything else thats in the way(remove the knot log and depth transducer if possible) it should wiggle out fairly easy. I was able to reinstall with a new platform in place( I glued the platform in place with PL-400). If you need to get at the port side of the heater (I think)you can access it by pulling out the drawer unit on the port side. Check the archives. Good luck!

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply! Was your fuel tank glassed in right up against the water heater?

Fuel tank

Yes it was. Once the platform is out it should come out fairly easy. There should about 3" of free space between the H2O heater and the forward bulkhead.
