After re-commissioning the boat, I find I can not get any water to go through the hot water tank. I get cold water just fine, but for some reason nothing out of the hot water side. I by-passed the heater as part of the winter lay-up (have done so for years) and re-connected correctly. Any suggestions? Thanks

water heater

Hi Allen; First the simple question, did you reset the circuit breaker on the panel? Second, if you check the instruction booklet for the water heater, you may find as I did, that there is also a breaker ON THE HEATER! It is a small red button buried under some insulation, that is an overheat protection breaker. My previous owner said he could never get the heater to work dockside, only after running the engine. Checked the manual and found the problem. Good luck Dave

Does the tank have a plastic dip tube. That introduces cold water to the bottom

tank the heated water is drawn off the top. Those dip tubes can melt if the power is turned on before the tank is filled. You should get cold water through even if the breaker is tripped.

Try this....

remove the screens on the Faucet and keep the Faucet open while filling the tank. The screens get clogged up and the air preasure tr4apped in the tanks keeps the pump from turning on.

Jim, He gets cold water from the faucet.

The problem is isolated to the hot water side of the system.

connect water tank line direct to hot side

On another similar discussion, someone suggested cross-connecting the hoses such that you put the cold supply throught the hot fitting which would isolate the problem to the tank if this test failed.

Ross, I know the problem.

I am a C-36 owner and have just had the same problem (the boat doesn't matter except C-36 have air-ate-ors). They get clogged and there is not enough presure in the system to detect the Faucet is open with the hot water tank connected. Mine were both clogged at the same time in the galley and the head. Thank you very much for pointing out I was wrong so fast. I may be, that is why I said "try".

My Problem Is

Dave, getting the water hot is not my problem, it's getting it to fill the tank and then come out (I would be happy at this point if I could get cold water to come out when I open the hot water side). Jim, I did remove the screen from the faucet and there was some buildup which I cleaned with the hopes that would help. Also tried filling tanks and leaving hot side faucet open (for an hour) to no avail. I did not however try leaving open with the screen removed, i'll give that a try next time I am at the boat. Ross, to the best of my knowledge, I never heated the tank with no water in it. I rarely use the eletric to heat the water, but rely more on what is in the tank warm from when the engine was running. I found if I open the faucet midway it seems some water goes into the hot water tank and I can get out, but it quickly goes away. Is there a way to introduce some air pressure to the system to push water into the tank and force any air or debris that may be trapped in the lines?

Could the problem be the hot water faucet or is the faucet in

the head also dry? A bicycle tire pump could be coupled to the inlet side. I once found a 2 inch long wood chip in a water line in a house. If you bypass the water heater do you get a normal flow? If yes, then put the outlet pipe into a bucket and pressurize the inlet side and see what comes out. Don't try to blow it through the whole system.

All HW outlet are dry

I haven't tried running with the tank bypassed, but it is certainly worth a try as is the low pressure pump into the inlet as you suggested, thanks.

Allen, give it a try...

I had the same problem this year. I took off the screen and left it open and and the tank filled. Something has to be blocked.

Thanks Jim,

I do plan on trying that as well. Hopefully something will get it flowing again. The other half likes her hot/warm water when cleaning up after me.
