I've only had my '83 C25 swing keel for a couple of months. When lowering the keel, a lot of water splashes/squirts/gushes up through the pipe where the cable runs through. Mind you, it's not gallons or anything, just maybe a total of a cup or two, and there's never any more entry after the keel is down or when I crank it back up. Just doesn't seem like a desirable thing. Is this normal or do I have an issue of some sort? If it is normal, has anyone who has experienced this come up with any way to stop it?

hello eric, seems odd, has the cable pipe ( rubber hose ) been replaced? is the pipe shorter than stock? the pipe should reach almost to the winch. john

Eric, I have a '86 C22 with a swing keel. The set up must be the same. The Keel cable goes thru a hose much like a radiator hose that is clamped to the pipe which is glassed into the hull. This hose brings the opening well above the water line keeping all water from entering. If you don't have this hose, Catalina Direct has them. Good Luck charlie

Hey guys, thanks for the posts.... Well, I can't say I've seen a hose exactly....it seems to be a metal pipe on mine. It's only about 4 or 5 inches down from the winch drum and extends about 5 inches or so above the berth cushion where it comes up through. It's well above waterline, it just seems to be a sloshing effect. I'll take a closer look at the pipe tonight, but I don't think it's rubber. Eric

hello eric, i replaced my cable pipe with a catalina direct part, it is a 2 inch diameter 12 inch long " radiator " hose held on to the through hull with two stainless steel hose clamps, the winch end is free floating. john

hmmm...that's pretty interesting. I'll have to take a close look at it tonight. It seems like the one on mine(pipe or hose or whatever it may be) is about that lengh. I just don't understand why it spits water like it does. So you've never had any water slosh up through yours?

Okay, I looked it over a little more closely. I see what you mean by the hose. It's a rubber hose that runs inside the fiberglass tube that's attached to the berth floor. Under that, the hose is attached to the through-hull with clamps. Both the fiberglass tube and the hose are merely an inch or so from the winch drum. Again, when we lowered the keel last night, at certain points during the lowering, water sloshes up through the hose(and all over the berth cushion. Doesn't happen under way or while raising it. It sure seems like everything is in order, but I'm stumped why this hasn't happened to anyone else(who's read this at least). I'm now trying to think of some way to flexibly can it off so it stops the water slosh, but doesn't restrict the cable.

hello eric, i think i have an Ah HA!! for you. down inside this metal through-hull is a " turning ball" that guides the cable as it changes direction. it also prevents the cable from cutting a trench in the hull as it exits. it is about the size of a golf ball and also fills the pipe to the extent that the water does not free flow with much force. look down inside and see if it has been removed. it is installed with a pin just about the spot that the rubber hose is clamped, the hose also keeps the pin from falling out. john

I think you may be right.....I was also looking at some diagrams of the system down there and got to thinking about that part. If it's in there and functioning properly, I don't see how I could possibly be getting the kind of slosh I'm getting. Haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but this week is our last sail of the season and the winter list begins. That's gonna be right at the top. Thanks! Eric
