Water dripping from propellor shaft

Hi folks, While working on my generator install this weekend on my 2003 Hunter 426, I noticed a drip from the prop shaft. it is about a drip every two-three seconds. Does anyone know if this is normal, I have attached a picture.

When did you last check or change the stuffing and was it tight then? Typically, the stuffing box wears the stuffing over time and needs adjustment or replacement.

Thank you both for your information, after reading some moreI see what needs to be done. We will start with adjustment and work from there. I have only had this boat since October of last year, I do remember it dripping slightly when we were underway during the survey. The surveyor was particular about running it and opening all the floors while were underway.

The bilge on our boat is one that always has about an inch or so of water in it. The surveyor, the PO and several others have told me that it is nothing to be concerned about. I would however like to do all that I can to stop this. I believe a lot of the smells in the boat would go away if it were more dry.

I'm wondering if any of the other owners of the same bought have dry bilges? This would be the 420, 426 (mine), the 43 and 44. We all share a hull for many years of production and our boats are essentially the same. Maybe someone will comment.

You are right about wanting a dry bilge and also the smells that can come from them. I do my best to keep my bilge dry. If I see any water accumulation I try to fix the source right away. A leak always get worst and could be the preliminary warning to a possible flooding hazard. Also does your AC drip pan drain into the bilge. If so you may want to consider installing a small eductor in the ac seawater line with the eductor suction from the drain pan. This maybe a source of some of your water.

Good idea on the A/C drains. Now that I have some of my larger work done, I am going to start doing as you suggested and hunting down these little drips and drops with the goal being a dry bilge.

I am going to be on the boat for the next five days or so, and will have an opportunity to look this stuff over.

Good idea on the A/C drains. Now that I have some of my larger work done, I am going to start doing as you suggested and hunting down these little drips and drops with the goal being a dry bilge.

The bilge on your boat should be dry.
It will remove smells from the boat, and make a big difference.
First item is your prop shaft.
Honestly, what I would do is invest in a dripless stuffing box. They are wonderful.
I had one on my 40.5, and not one drop of water
My 49 has one, and same thing. You will never need to think about it ever again.
Next thing is to plumb your airco pans into sump boxes, or another way of draining them overboard. Airco units put a lot of water in the bilge.
If you want to know the really, really, right way to do it, here goes :
Get a Whale IC grey water pump with T fitting.
Drain your showers & aircos to it.
You will have a maintenance free grey water system with no filters, etc. It will just work 100% reliably.
Your bilge will be dry, and you will have reduced on board smells dramatically

Thanks artboas, I wish I would have posted this before I replaced both sumps this past winter. I looked up the the pump you mentioned and it looks pretty neat and has good reviews. Even the brand new sumps with clean lines get kind of mucky pretty quick.

Concern -- Stuffing box must have a slow drip when under power, otherwise you will burn it up and scar the shaft. From the picture it seems a little bit more than necessary so might need a minor tightening. Don't over do it.
